Spring cleaning your diet

“Clean eating” is a practice of eating foods that are closest to the way they came out of the earth. Clean foods are natural, free of added sugars, hydrogenated fats, trans-fats and preservatives. Eating clean can help you feel healthy and energetic.  Shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store to fill your cart with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein and dairy is a great place to start. If you do buy a food that is packaged, scan the ingredient list. Aim to buy foods with 5 ingredients or less and skip foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce!  Remember, the foods you put in your body should both nourish and satisfy you.

Want more information on ways to clean up your eating habits? Contact Amanda Fearheiley, RD/LD.

GenesisPURE

GenesisPURE core items

Amber Moon Studio is now a distributor for GenesisPURE, a line of nutritional products. I (Sharon) started using these in January 2011, and noticed an improvement in how I feel. As an athlete, I’m quite conscious about my food intake, so was somewhat surprised by the benefits I felt – first sleeping much more soundly, then a better overall energy level. I’ve also noticed my enviromental allergies haven’t bothered me as much this spring.  I started with Nutrition, a liquid multi-vitamin & mineral (absorbed more readily than most pills), Liquid Cleanse (a full system cleanse), and GoYin (balances the body’s pH).  Check out these core products online.  I’ve got GoYin in stock most of the time.  Let me know if you want to try any products – order by the 20th, and they will be in NLT the 27th of each month.

Mix-it up!

Interested in bringing variety to your work out? Try these, from a workshop with Len Kravitz, PhD, University of New Mexico researcher and program coordinator for exercise science. He discussed the provocative research backing several training styles:

Tempo Training – train to a music tempo, matching step for beat, so that 70-85% VO2max* (14-17 RPE*) is attained; aim for 30-60 minutes of continuous movement.

Metabolic Base Training – lower intensity work at 40-70% VO2max (11-13 RPE) sustained for 60-80 minutes continuous movement.

Split Training – 2 to 4 high intensity exercise bouts about 15-20 minutes each at 70-85% VO2max (14-17 RPE) separated by 5 minutes ACTIVE rest; complete on multiple modes such as bicycle, treadmill, or pool.

Interval Training – alternate 3 bouts low (30-40% VO2max/10-11 RPE) with 3 minute bouts of high intensity (80-90% VO2max/16-18 RPE) for 30-60 minutes.

Supramaximal – Interval 15-20 supramax bouts (105-110% VO2max all out sprints) for 1 minute; 2-5 minutes active rest between bouts.

Fartlek Plus – 30-60 minutes with spontaneous variation in low, moderate, and high intensity activity in various modes.

To enhance fat metabolism, incorporate low intensity, long duration workouts to increase metabolic base. Occasionally incorporate some high intensity, short duration workouts. Also include multi-mode training for variety.

The ACSM recommends getting your cardio workout in 3-5 days per week for the most benefit.

*VO2max = maximum amount of oxygen you can take in and use in an all out effort. This has to be found in a lab.  You may also use the same percentages of your Heart Rate Reserve, instead of VO2 max.  In order to calculate your Heart Rate Reserve, you will need to know your resting heart rate (for more accuracy).  The best time to find your resting heart rate is first thing in the morning when you wake up without the alarm clock, find your pulse, count for a full minute.  Do this for 3 mornings, and then take the average of those 3. If you are on beta blockers, you will not be able to use Heart Rate Reserve to find your training zone – use the RPE method listed below instead.

*RPE = Rating of Perceived Exertion. This is a scale ranging from 6 (rest) to 20 (maximal effort); it also correlates to heart rate.  If your heart rate is 120, your RPE should be 12 (just take the “0″ or last number off the heart rate).  This method of monitoring your intensity is a great way to get in touch with how hard (or easy) the whole body is working at a given moment.

Everything under the Moon

My Lonestar Ironman 70.3 is now done!  I hadn’t realized when I started just how much it would take me away from the little things I do for Amber Moon Studio, such as the writing of this newsletter!  I’m back now, and slowly getting caught up on the little things.  I’ve got a blog about my race experience if anyone wants to go along for the actual race day journey! Photos are available on the Amber Moon Studio facebook page.

We are working on a team training/event schedule for those of you interested in joining us for a little fun – warrior dashes, triathlons, runs, open water swims.  Stay tuned for more info.

Thursday evenings, starting in June, we will be holding track workouts at 7pm. More info to be posted soon.

I’m changing my schedule a bit: only existing clients may book appointments after 7p, and I will be limiting the number of evenings I work past 7p to 2/week.  Its just too tiring for me to start at 9a, and go til 8p!  I’ve currently got 1 regular session/week at this late hour, so only 1 other is available.  Book early to get your spot.  I’ve got other massage therapists on call if you need a late massage.

Pilates special

Pilates equipment sessions: get 4 sessions for $160 (save $69).  Must attend weekly sessions (best way to see benefits). Limit 3 packages per person.  Must be purchased by June 30, 2011, and used by October 31, 2011. Valid only for new Pilates clients.

    Settling into our new orbit

We are finally settling into the new place, and getting life organized again. The new equipment should be arriving in the next week or 2, and then we’ll really be ready to roll!  The staff here is working hard to get up to speed on the equipment, smoothing out scheduling issues, and trying to cover all our bases.

As we get settled, how about you? Are you getting settled into 2011?  What would you like to achieve this year? Some simple tips for helping you stick with your New Years’ Resolution:

    1. Write it down and post is somewhere. Many times we forget about our goals, so seeing, on a daily basis, what you want to achieve helps immensely.

    2. Tell someone.  This helps hold you accountable for your new goal.

    3. Set small goals, as well as the big ones.  What are you going to do today, this week, over the next 2 weeks, this month to get you there?  Many times people look at the big picture without going into the detail.  Set these small goals, and the big ones will happen.

    4. Phrase your goals positively. Yep, even the way we think about our goals is important.  Try to phrase it so you are working toward  something (“I will do 30 min of exercise 5x/week) instead of avoiding it (“I’m never going to Starbucks again.”)

    5. Goals should be SMART. this means they are specific (“I will run a 5k this year” vs. “I will get fit); measurable (we can measure the distance you ran); action oriented (there’s stuff you have to do to get there – ie, a plan of doing); realistic/relevant (is it realistic for you to run a 5k?); and timed (pick a race that you plan to do, pay the entry fee; you need to have a set date you will have this finished by).  Making your goals SMART allows you to track your progress toward that goal.  “Getting fit” is awfully hard to define and measure without further clarification.

    Everything under the Moon

Please remember, and be kind to your massage therapist & trainer. We deal with several clients a day, and if someone comes in sick, this means not only the possibility of the staff getting sick, but our other clients as well. Even though we wash/sanitize our hands regularly before, during & after sessions, some germs just don’t give up. If one of us catches it, we may be unable to help those that need ourservices. Please be pro-active! We will reschedule you at the next available slot. Thanks.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please try to give at least 24 hours of notice, although we do understand that there are times last minute emergencies happen.

Water! Amber Moon Studio has bottled water in the frig for all our clients when you come for your session – especially after massages. If we forget to offer you a bottle, please feel free to ask! You can also ask for one anytime you are here.

The format of this newsletter is going to be changing over the next few months, to make it quicker for you to read and process.  We’ll be going to a bi-weekly format.  Feel free to give us your opinion and feedback – this newsletter is all about educating & informing YOU!

We’re getting ready to revamp our website. Please has a sense of humor as we do this!

The Amber Moon Studio universe is expanding!!! (yes, still!)

We will be MOVING to our new location by the end of the 2010.  Please watch for your appointment reminders – we’ll let you know via these when we are moved.

Amber Moon Studio is proud to announce 2 more staff, Lisa Pruett and Carly Ryan.  I’ve got 1 more person that i’ll be introducing in the next few weeks as well.

    Please welcome Lisa Pruett!

If ever a “mini me” there was – it’s Lisa!  She’s been my training partner (strength training & triathlon), taken her AFAA Personal Training Certification & various other workshops under me, and has, hence, been heavily influenced by the way I think (and she’s extremely creative on her own).  She’s already picked up several clients at Amber Moon Studio, and I look forward to her continued dedication to this grand adventure!

Hello Everyone, my name is Lisa and I truly look forward to working with you through Amber Moon Studio.  I have participated in numerous road races, cycling events, marathons, and recently, an Iron Man.  The one constant I have taken away from my participation in these events is that there is nothing like the joy and excitement of setting a fitness goal and successfully reaching that goal.  At Amber Moon Studio it will be my pleasure to help you do the same, whether you choose to train for a 5k, an Iron Man, or a crazy off road obstacle race like the Tough Mudder.  No fitness goal is too small or too big.  And, once that goal is reached, guess what, there’s always something new to look forward too!  Let’s reach for your fitness dream and beyond.

Lisa will be doing Pilates private sessions in addition to 2 offerings completely unique to her background:

    Obstacle Course Training

Seen the Warrior Dashes or Gladiator Trainings out there?  Want to know what they are all about?  Are you interested in a super fun and super intense training program that will whip you into peak physical shape and get you ready to meet the challenges of the new obstacle-course off-road runs that are coming to Austin?  Or, maybe you’re bored with your current training routine?  Well, this is the program for you.  Let Lisa custom design a fitness program that will strengthen your core and prepare you to run, sprint, climb, push, pull, lift, and crawl.  Get ready to play hard! Through the end of 2010, $40/session.

    Martial Arts Madness

Are you looking for a way to strengthen and tone your body, shape your butt, tighten your core and improve your cardiovascular system?  Try Lisa’s Martial Arts Madness.  Lisa is a black belt in Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do and uses the kicks, punches, stances, and strength building exercises of this martial art to create a powerful and explosive work out that gets great results fast.  Through the end of 2010, $40/session.

    And please welcome Carly Ryan!

I’ve worked with Carly at a senior residence, where we specifically focused on Pilates and practical training for the 80+ year old residents.  There were lots of specialized programs in Pilates, balance training, training for osteoporisis, healthy shoulders, and posture.  I’m bring Carly in to help me with the clients that need a more medical basis/rehabilitative quality to their training programs, both Pilates & personal training.

The best part about being a personal trainer is being able to help clients reach their goals – either being fit enough to play with a family member or completing a race or new challenge.  My philosophy is to help you reach those goals without injury.  I appreciate that Amber Moon Studio focuses on the individual needs of each client so that you get the best results.

I have been in the fitness industry since 2002 and teach anything but dance classes.  Some of my clients include triathletes, pre- and post- joint replacement (Aqua and Pilates equipment), and anyone looking to improve their health. There are several clients that have trained with me for over 5 years.  I believe in continuing education and have been accepted to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Texas Woman’s University beginning Fall 2011.  I set personal and professional goals and have completed a marathon and several sprint triathlons.  I look forward to helping you reach your own fitness milestones.

    Maximize your merriment

Holiday hints from the Amber Moon Studio staff – how we manage to make it through the holidays… and maybe they’ll help you too!

    Sharon

    1. Turn off the computer/tv/electronics early (8p for me). Spend some quality mind-stilling time reading something light (instead of the book that keeps you fascinated and entranced until 2a…). This helps quiet the mind, reduce your mental scatter, and allows you to drift more easily into sleep.

    2. Say “no.”  Pick and choose what holiday events you attend.

    3. Get up and move – be active, do something. Doesn’t have to be formal exercise, it just has to be non-sedentary.

    4. Get into the spirit of the holidays.  Spend time with people instead of money on people.

    5. Make quality time for yourself and your pets.

    Amanda

Food is everywhere during the holiday season, making it tough to stick to your healthful eating and exercise habits.  With a little attention, however, you can make it through the holidays without losing track of your healthy lifestyle.

Here are 5 Tips to help you have a Healthy Holiday Season:

    1. Survey the entire table before you take any food. Decide what foods are worth eating and what can be ignored, and then stick to that decision. Why waste calories on foods that don’t bring you pleasure?
    2. When you are the host or hostess, include nutritious and lower-calorie foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean meats on the menu.  When you are a guest, bring along a lower-calorie dish to share.
    3. Try not to hang out near the food.  Find a comfortable spot across the room and focus on people instead of eating.
    4. Sip a large glass of water between every alcoholic drink or non-alcoholic punch or eggnog. This will help keep you hydrated and you’ll drink fewer calories by the end of the night.
    5. And remember, enjoy your favorite holiday treats but take a small portion.  Eat slowly, and savor the taste and texture of the wonderful foods of the season!

    Lisa

    1.  Enjoy outside time with the weather.

    2.  Bake goodies for friends and relatives – even better if you do it with a friend.

    3.  Light candles with your favorite scents.

    4.  Exercise – if you are a runner this is a great time to enjoy the fact that it’s not 100 degrees!

    5.  Denial works best for me.  I’m told “compartmentalization” is a nicer term.

I’ve already introduced Hjalmar Perez, massage therapist, certified personal trainer, and lifestyle wellness coach.  This newsletter I’d like to introduce Amanda Fearheiley, RD/LD (registered & licensed dietitian), and certified personal trainer.  I first met Amanda at a health fair at the Northwest YMCA about 4 years ago.  I was really struggling with my food allergies (gluten, soy & lactose to name a few), and was trying to become a triathlete.  I knew I needed help… and ta-DA! Here she was.  Over my 19 years of working in fitness, I’ve known several RDs, and Amanda is by far the most practical.  She works with you so any food intake changes are practical for the way you live.  Amber Moon Studio is offering a special on sessions with her through the end of the year… see Specials below for more details!  Amanda is coming in initially as our Dietitian, and will begin moving into more personal training & pilates as we continue to expand.

    “Hello Amber Moon Studio Fans!

I am excited to begin working with each and every one of you.  My passion and interest in nutrition stems back to when I started competing in athletics.  I realized that there was a strong link between what I ate and my performance. I would like to apply this link to your life. If I could take the word “diet” out of dietitian I would! I believe that life should include the enjoyment of food and food can be tailored to optimally fuel our bodies. That being said, I will never restrict any of your favorite foods. I promote feeding both the body and spirit for your personal goals. Whether you are wanting to decrease certain disease symptoms, improve your energy, or enhance your performance, I am here to help. I am confident that I can individually fit your nutrition needs with my well-rounded experience spanning from critical care nutrition/ medical nutrition therapy to wellness nutrition and personal training. In short, using the wise words of Hippocrates: Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food!” – Amanda

    All about the feet

This month, Amber Moon Studio is taking a look at the feet, your physical ones as well as the figurative ones: the feet symbolize grounding, a base, travel.  The feet themselves are fascinating – did you know there are 28 bones in each foot, comprising 33 joints? We have 2 arches in the feet – and when the transverse one falls (goes under the ball of your foot), the toes hurt. When the longitudinal one falls (your “arch”), there can be a cascade effect all the way to your spine.  For this reason, we all need to take care of our feet.  Several things we can do to help the feet stay healthy:

Work the intrinsic foot muscles. Yep, we have muscles in our feet as well.  For those of you on Facebook, I’ll be posting a video or 2 on specific exercises for strengthening these very small muscles. Until then… try: 1) scrunching your toes on a towel, this should result in bringing the towel toward you slowly; 2) curl just the toes under, and then pull your toes up and spread them as wide as you can – all while keeping your ankle flexed (pulling top of foot toward your shin); 3) lift your arch – put a little weight on the feet, then slowly bring the big toe in toward the heel – its a very small movement. Try to keep the ball of the foot & heel on the ground! 4) Draw the alphabet with your toes, trying to keep the movements as big as possible – move the ankles, the arch, and the toes. Get creative!

Check on the toe nails & skin on the bottom of the feet. Your massage therapist will really appreciate you for this!  A lot of time we leave our feet in shoes all day – they need a chance to breathe.  On the flip side, some people run around barefoot or in flipflops. Think about what that does for your feet – exposure to the elements, contact with varying surfaces, no structural support (though many people have good foot structure, some need help. Like me!)  Try to take a few moments each day to pamper those feet – remember, they hurt, it goes up the rest of the body.

Give your feet a massage (or let us!).  Your feet represent your body, and working on specific areas of thefeet can help alleviate tension in the corresponding areas of the body. For examples, the ends of your toes represent the top of your head.  Have a headache? Try rubbing the ends of all your toes.

Also, take a figurative look at your feet. They represent your grounding,

your connection to the physical world. They give you a base from which to move.  We have our physical feet, we also have our energetic feet.  Ever feel like you just can’t get grounded, or that you’ve had your feet swept our from under you?  That’s part of the energetic feet. Everyone grounds themselves differently, but standing in grass/dirt might be a help. Get those shoes off, and feel the connect. Feel with your feet. Wiggle your toes!

Amanda has also come up with some foundational info (grounding) for you -

The Foundation (Feet) of your Diet: Carbohydrates!

    The Basics

Carbohydrates offer an immediate source of energy for your body. They provide the fuel for your muscles and organs, such as your brain.

    The role of carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide all the cells of the body with the energy they need for everyday tasks and physical activity.

    Amount of carbohydrate to consume

If the foods you eat contain too many carbohydrates, the following occurs:

    · Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscle cells, and are used when the body needs an extra burst of energy

    · Anything leftover that is not stored in liver and muscle cells is turned into fat

If you don’t take in an ample supply of carbohydrates, the following can occur:

    · Fatigue

    · Muscle cramps

    · Poor mental function

Fatigue easily results from deprivation of carbohydrates, which is seen in persons who fast, possibly interfering with activities of daily living.

Carbohydrates are your body’s first choice for fuel. If given a choice of several types of foods simultaneously, your body will use the energy from carbohydrates first.

Make sure you eat moderate amounts of carbohydrates to keep your body fueled properly—50%-55% of calories should come from carbohydrates.

    Foods containing carbohydrates

Choose the following foods containing carbohydrates (the best ones to eat):

    · Fruit, raw or canned in its own juice

    · Whole grains (whole-wheat breads, brown rice, oatmeal, whole-grain cereals, and other starchy foods containing a minimum of 3 grams (g) fiber/100 calories)

    · Lean dairy foods such as yogurt and milk

To learn more about foods that supply a good source of carbohydrate or meal planning ideas, please contact Amanda Fearheiley,  RD/LD, cPT

Feet and Self Love: Conformity of “Perfection”; Costs Self Love, Self Expression and Ultimate Happiness

Did you know: The Chinese Art of Foot Binding is a 1000 year old practice that was highly revered in its day because tiny feet were a symbol of grace and beauty. Foot binding started in the 10th century and it continued to be practiced into the 20th century.  It started in the Wealthy class and through the ages worked its way into the peasant class. If you had big feet as a women then it was said you were supposed to do mans work and many men shunned women with big feet so women worked at binding their feet so they could marry. The concept of tiny delicate feet was highly sought after in China (They even had distinctions of what best feet looked like: a three inch foot was known as a ‘golden lotus’ and became the most highly prized, the three and a half inch to 4 inch foot was a ‘silver lotus’, better than no binding, but second class.

Foot-binding, is the deformation of a woman’s foot by breaking and folding the four smaller toes down and pressing them against the soles of foot, essentially bowing the arch of the foot, and then binding it all tightly together from toes to ankle with strips of cloth. The goal of this binding was to stop growth and have 3 to 4inch feet. This procedure would result with horrible discomfort and intense deformity of the feet. It resulted in leaving the women with the unstable ability to walk which is called the Lotus Gait. They were essentially cripples (Levy, 1992).  It is estimated that about 4.5 billion Chinese women were subjected to this ritual.

When we read these things we think that these are so barbaric, cruel and outrageous because they seem so strange in this day and age. Like how could a 3-inch cripple foot be beautiful?  However before we smirk in that direction, we might need to look at where our society is and where we are headed.

We don’t need barbaric traditions, when we have technology. Yay Technology! We can take a pill to be the perfect or have the perfect: weight, body feature, lover, beauty queen, gentlemen, happiness, sleep, energy, healthiest, fittest, etc.

If we can’t take a pill yet, we can get surgery to fix any imperfections. Our craving for “looking good” has not changed throughout the years. The only thing that is different is our methods.  We are still caught up in “binding” changing what we are; to be what we think we should be.

It begins with parents, peers, schools, society, etc. Then we do so much binding, re-arranging and changing to fit “that” picture, we begin to forget who we are and wonder why we are not happy.

So I ask you where in your life are you binding yourself/hiding who you are to fit in. Is that serving you? What would freedom look like?

Where in your life, is there an opportunity for more self-expression?

Louise L. Hay, the author of the international bestseller You Can Heal Your Life, says whatever problems you are facing in life, the place to start is with yourself; begin with self-acceptance and work to eliminate self-criticism.

“When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works”

And of course when we really love ourselves then there is no need for “binding” hiding our true selves to be someone else. Self Love and Acceptance is ground that is most powerful place to stand for a truly fulfilled life.  You are the only you! Love it! Live it! You are a Gift!

Upcoming Athletic Events (by no means all that’s going on) – Remember the Athlete’s Special when you are prepping for your race!

We deal with several clients a day, and if someone comes in sick, this means not only the possibility of me getting sick, but my other clients as well. Even though I wash/sanitize my hands regularly before, during & after sessions, some germs just don’t give up. If I catch it, I will be unable to help those that need my services. Please be pro-active! Thanks.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please try to give at least 24 hours of notice, though I do understand that there are times last minute emergencies happen.

Water! I do have bottled water in the frig for all my clients when you come for your session – especially after massages. If I forget to offer you a bottle, please feel free to ask! You can also ask for one anytime you are here.

    Mid-October announcements

    October 12th, 2010

Introducing the first IronMen of the Wh(eee)^3! Racing Team!

    We have IronMen among us!

I would like to congratulate 2 of my athletes, Suzyn Skaggs Barrientos & Lisa Pruett, on their  achievements at the RedMan IronMan distance triathlon on September 25, 2010.

    RedMan finisher Suzyn Skaggs

Suzyn (right), doing her second triathlon ever, finished the race – 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run – in 15h 10 min.  She looked strong throughout the whole thing!  She finished 2nd in her age group, and 15th overall female.  Way to go Suzyn!!!

“0-15hrs in 1 year=Iron Women!  Thanks completely to the Wh(eee)!3 Racing Team! I wouldn’t be able to tell the story without them. And starting at 0 a year ago meant: only able to run 3 miles (out of breath mostly), not being able to swim (other swimmers stayed away from me) and not biked in the last 12 years.  Finishing the Ironman was a long time dream. Thanks to the great economy (window of time opened) and Lisa agreeing to the insane idea to become my Ironman Partner, we climbed the Ironman mountain together with our Fearless Wise Mr Miyagi-Sharon Boon. Thank you Sharon for your amazing triathlon wisdom, patience, coaching and sheer genius “wax on wax off”; swim drills, bike drills, and run drills. The Race was much easier than our training!! Yay-I didn’t think that was possible. I finished Strong, Happy, and Injury free because of you! I can’t express enough how Thankful I am to the Wh(eee)3! team!!

I am proof, if you are triathlon dreaming -you have a team that can take you there no matter where you are starting from. Everyone is an Athlete and the Wh(eee)3! team can show you! Just bring your heart and patience and it is absolutely possible! Suzyn (aka “Shoop”)

    Lisa Pruett, RedMan Triathlon competitor

Lisa feeling delirious in finishing the swim in under 2 hours!

Lisa (left), having battled swimming in open water issues, finished her swim with a huge smile on her face, and well under the time she had allotted for herself.  She expected to use the whole time (2.5h), and came out in 1:53. Talk about conquering the swim part of the race!  She finished the bike, and felt good on the run until her foot pain (a non-trainable) stopped her.  If not for this pain, she would have completed the race,  as the rest of her body  felt great.

Finishing the swim was the culmination of 11 years of conquering my fear of the water. My first Danskin took 57 minutes to complete just the swim, and stopping to hang on to a kayak for dear life every 25 yards.  At Redman, I would have been happy to have been finished after the swim – the bike & the run I knew I could do.  I have now ritually burned my swimsuit – I no longer “have to” swim.” Lisa

Follow the posting of their IronMan adventure on Amber Moon studio’s  facebook page, and read their insights on the Wh(eee)^3! Racing Blog.

    Cross train your…

    • Exercise habits:  Over the past 19 year in the fitness industry, I’ve seen it happen regularly – a new piece of equipment or new class format comes out, and everyone flocks to it.  They end up doing the same thing every day – cardio or strength training.  The elliptical trainer, indoor cycling and Zumba are examples of this phenomemon;   I’ve seen people doing it every day.  Yeah, it can be a great workout – it can also reduce your benefits over time, especially if the person is always doing it exactly the same.  This can lead to overuse injuries from the repetitive moment, and muscle imbalances because only one movement pattern is being trained. And because its the only thing you do, you get really efficient at it; in order to see changes, you have to work harder. Or longer. Or more frequently (but these people are already in 7 days/week).  If you add in more variety in your exercise habits, you decrease your risk of injury, and get a better overall fitness level, as well as prevent boredom.  Think about what is realistic in terms of time -how much time do you really have to spend working out? Will it interrupt your life?  So next time you are heading for a workout, try something new. Even just 5 minutes.  Change what you do by day, week, month or even season.  Unless you are training for a specific event, you only have benefit from cross training your exercise habits.
    • Restaurant choices: You told a friend you were going out to eat. Can they guess where you are going? Mine probably can.  We are creatures of habit – we like specific restaurants because they are convenient, we like their food, or we like their atmosphere.  And we also tend to eat the same thing.  At given restaurants, my sister & I can guess what Mom is going to order before she “decides”.  So, with this creature of habit thing going on, let’s look at the lack of diversity.  Adding variety to whare you eat out, what you order, or to what you cook at home, expands your taste buds  and may give you different vitamins & minerals.  Think of it as an adventure!  When was the last time you tried something new? Go ahead, you just might like it!

    Everything under the Moon

Volunteer opportunity to help support the Northwest YMCA Partner of Youth Campaign: I’ve got a water station out at the Longhorn 70.3 @ Decker Lake on Sunday, Oct 17.  I formally invite you to come play, have fun, be in the great outdoors, and get inspired!  Email me if you are interested. I’ll send more info out as I receive it.

Time to TRADE!!!  Bring in lightly used or new twin sheets ( preferably colored or patterned) and I will give you a discount on your next session (or put it on your account for later).  I’m looking for regular cotton sheets as well as flannel sheets.  $10 credit if used, $20 credit if new.  Anyone that brings in sheets with turtles or kitties on them gets an extra $5 credit.

Feel free to schedule your appointment a couple of months in advance.  It guarantees your space.

    You are what you…

    • Live - How have you decided to live your life? Are you a couch potato? Are you on the go all the time? Do you live for your family without giving yourself enough time?  Do you take time for staying healthy, for getting away from the job(s), or do people define you by what you do (which is perfectly okay with me in my case!)?  Most importantly, at least from my point of view, are you living a life that you love?  Its seems like people get stuck sometimes, and they need help moving forward.  This newsletter is offering a few areas that you might want to look into to help improve the quality of your life, help you stick to the values that are important to you, or at least get you thinking about how you are living.  Everyone can have a positive influence on the world around him/her.
    • Read – When was the last time you read something out of your normal genre?  Reading a vareity of materials from different authors or viewpoints helps expand your horizon, your vocubulary and your mind. I admit, I’ve been stuck in Star Wars mode on occasion (I realize this surprises you), and honestly just need a break from SciFi on occasion… so I read books that other people hand me; my sister gives me oddities; I read things I’m interested in (mind-body, holistic healing, SciFi, yoga, energy work); I read to keep me up to date on the world (The Week).  I choose to read positive things. I choose to read educational things.  What have you chosen to read lately? What have you read that challenged your preconceptions, broadened your horizons?
    • Spend - What does how you spend your money and where you spend your money say about you?  Personally, I choose to spend my money at local Austin entities whenever possible, so I support Austin business, and not the comglomerates that have no idea what living in Austin is about.  I choose to spend my money at small locally owned businesses, like myself.  Do you only buy high-end clothes/goods, or will the ones that are reasonably priced but of good quality suffice?  Do you spend your money on a name brand because that is “Better”? It might be. It might not be. It might just be more expensive.  I also choose to spend my money where I get excellent customer service, even if it costs me a little bit more. Being in a very customer service oriented industry, this is of the utmost importance to me!
    • Think - Have you ever really paid attention to the inner dialogue that goes on in your head? Yes, those voices.  Next time you are having one of those internal conversations, notice how you phrase things. Notice how you phrase things when you have conversations with other people.  How you think, & what you think, has a huge influence on your attitude and on whether people want to be around you.  Let’s take Mondays as an example.  Most people hate Mondays. Why? Variety of reasons. So if you hate Mondays, guess what, Mondays are gonna suck.  Now, let’s change how you look at Mondays… let’s say instead: Mondays are a challenge. You get to work on switching from play mode (the weekend) to being in a structured job/week/school/whatever.   If you perceive Mondays as a challenge (and you’ll need to like challenges for this to work), then it becomes a positive entity.  You can meet and overcome the challenge of Monday.   Other common internal conversations you might want to be aware of and work on editing: “That was stupid”, ” I can’t do it”, “its a bad day.”  Guess what – if you think these things, you are, you can’t, and you’re right. I’ve got an aloe plant with 6 starts coming off it, varying sizes. Anyone that wants to help me repot the mother plant can have 1 or 2 of the starts. She’s big enough that 1 person doing the job is tough and a little prickly!

Amber Moon Studio will be closed on Labor Day and Sept 23-27.

Sharon’s Swimmers! I’ve got a separate email list going for those of you that swim, are learning to swim, and are thinking about learning to swim. I forward articles of interest, as well as helpful tips as I find them. Email me if you’re not already on the e-list and want to be. If you have Amber Moon Studio “Liked” on Facebook, I also post all of these articles & bits on there. Ok, I post them more frequently on there.

Upcoming Athletic Events (by no means all that’s going on) – Remember the Athlete’s Special when you are prepping for your race!

Please remember, and be kind to your massage therapist. I deal with several clients a day, and if someone comes in sick, this means not only the possibility of me getting sick, but my other clients as well.

You are what you eat… Get ready to learn some interesting facts on magnesium and where to find this magnificent mineral.

Why is magnesium important? It is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. In addition to maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, it supports a steady heart rhythm and a healthy immune system. It is also important for strong bones, steady blood sugar and normal blood pressure. With all of these functions, it is no wonder that it has roles in preventing and managing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and high blood pressure.  If you are what you eat and you aren’t eating enough magnesium, you may experience loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, muscle cramps or numbness and tingling. Optimal sources of magnesium include:  Apricots, bananas, nuts, wheat bran, whole grains, seafood, soybeans and dark green vegetables.

    Caffeine and…

… exercise:  Ever need that jolt of caffeine to get your system moving prior to exercising?  For moderate intensity exercise, it just might work!  Keep your caffeine levels between 350 -500 mg (1 cup of brewed coffee = 150-250 mg).  These smaller amounts of caffeine may change your perception of exercise, so that the moderate intensity work you are doing seems easier.  Above 600 mg of caffeine, you may experience dehydration, which can lead to poor temperature control while you are exercising, and may increase your heart rate at rest (that feeling of “on edge”) – thus hampering your ability to exercise if it’s too high to start with.

… massage: Massage, any form, is intended to create a relaxation response in your nervous system. If you drink caffeine regularly, this can be counter-productive to achieving this benefit of massage.  Because caffeine is a stimulant and thus can make your muscles tighter, it will take a longer time for your muscles, and nervous system, to relax (1).  You can still get this response, however it’s just going to take longer, depending on the amount on caffeine you take in.  This constant increase in muscle tension leads to pain, so if you are using massage to help counter pain, this can slow down your progress.

Getting off caffeine can reduce your tension/pain, and sometimes eliminates it altogether. Cutting down even a little helps, going from a little to nothing helps is even better! Many people are sensitive enough to caffeine that a small amount makes a big difference in their tension and pain. Green tea (even though it has many beneficial qualities) or chocolate (I heard those gasps…) are enough to cause tension/pain for many people. The only way to find out what effect caffeine has on you is to stop using it.  Remember – change is a challenge, but you CAN do it!

… life: Even if you only have one cup first thing in the morning, your sleep quality that night is diminished. You wake feeling less refreshed, and grab a cup. Then you get drowsy in the afternoon from lack of quality sleep the night before, and head for another cup. It’s a vicious cycle. Starbucks has you hooked.

Caffeine reduces REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). This means less dreams, therefore less chance for your deep mind to do emotional processing. With this reduction or elimination of the deepest sleep, there is less recovery from physical stress, less benefit from exercise or massage, and less HGH (Human Growth Hormone) release (needed for recovery & repair of the body). The inability to descend fully into deep sleep is associated with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS).

Regular caffeine use has significant blood volume and neural effects (as previously mentioned) in habitual coffee drinkers, and it may exaggerate your responses to the stressful events of normal daily life. Repeated daily blood pressure elevations (“another cup of Joe please”) and increases in the stress reactions caused by caffeine may contribute to an increased risk of coronary heart disease in the adult population (2).  The elevation of blood pressure due to caffeine appears to add to that elicited by stress (1+1=4)(3).
Caffeine may give you the appearance of anxiety neurosis (emotional tension). Symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, headache, lethargy, insomnia, irregular heart rates, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may be resolved by reducing caffeine intake (4).
Caffeine is in coffee, green/white/black teas, chai, kombucha, sodas, sports gels, energy drinks, and OTC pain drugs. Read your labels, see what you’re taking in.

On the good side, moderate consumption of caffeine, somewhere in the range of 300-500 mg, has cardioprotective benefits (yep, its good for your heart). Please remember this says moderate – 1-2 cups of coffee per day (or 1 Starbucks tall?).  Teas also have lots of antioxidant, so cutting them out completely may not be necessary.  Weigh the pros vs. the cons.  Talk to someone more knowledgeable – your doctor, or a registered dietitian (RD).  Find out what is best for YOU.

People who have quit caffeine often note they have less anxiety, less anger, and feel less stressed. It may take a month or two for this to happen.  I freed myself from the grasp of Starbucks in May 2010, and sleep much more soundly, feel MORE invigorated and ready to bounce out of bed most mornings, and I save a lot of money!  Caffeine withdrawal can be a challenge, but the benefits of it are well worth it.  First, set your mind to doing it. Second, cut it out slowly.  As you are cutting it out, try drinking more water to help avoid potential withdrawal headaches.  Amanda Fearheiley, RD, LD, also has some other helpful suggestions below.

    Everything under the Moon

    • New scent for face massage: Jasmine!  Please ask to smell it, and to try it  during your next massage.  I’ve still got the unscented and Green Tea scent.
    • I’ve also got new light scents around the Studio – Grapefruit Fresh (odor absorbing) and French Vanilla. The Hinoki Mist is still here. Please let me know how you like the scents, and if the strength of them is okay.
    • Please remember that if you are sick, or think you might be sick, please cancel your appointment. Germs are pesky little things, and as much as I sanitize, I still might miss a few of them.  They can infect me, or another client.  Be kind to all that Amber Moon Studio serves, so that I may do the greatest good.

From other realms of the galaxy

So, you think you might be hooked on caffeine, but still want to have energy?  Here are some tips provided by Amanda Fearheiley, RD, LD:

    • Don’t quit cold turkey. Caffeine is addictive, and you are likely to have withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly begin to abstain from it completely.
    • Slowly wean yourself from fully caffeinated beverages by mixing them with decaffeinated varieties.
    • Fuel yourself with food.  Be sure that you are having a light carbohydrate snack prior to exercise and a light carbohydrate snack directly after exercise.  After your exercise is complete, try to eat a well-balanced meal within 1-2 hours.
    • To maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day, you should go no longer than 4 to 5 hours without eating. Be sure to include whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains plus protein sources, every time you eat.
    • For more information or to speak to a registered, licensed dietitian, call Amanda at 512-745-3946 or email fearheileyrd@yahoo.com

    Fun in the Sun

Summer is just around the corner!  My favorite time of year, though I’m also becoming quite fond of the Texas Sprin g & Fall.  But honestly, I like it warm. That’s why I moved here!  With summer comes outdoor activities… and here are some tips to help you make the most of your time outside:

    • Water. Drink water or other fluids. regularly.  Lots of it.  If you are thirsty, you are already 10% dehydrated.  This can lead to muscle cramps and irregular heart rhythms.  Helps keep your body temperature regulated.
    • Vitamin D.  Spend 10-15 minutes/day outside without sunscreen to get your daily dose of vitamin D. After that, slather the sunscreen on!
    • Electrolytes.  If you are a heavy sweater in the heat, you might consider taking in more electrolytes.  Loss of these through sweating can increase muscle cramping, and a decrease how well the body functions.
    • Be outside in non-peak heat.  Mornings or evenings.  Afternoons, aside from peak radiation from the sun, tend to be most challenging.
    • Light colored clothing.  Stores less heat.  Dark colored clothing keeps it. Mosquitos are also drawn to the darker colors.

    Stone of the month: Garnet

Garnet is a protective stone, promoting healing, strength, and protection. It is thought to strengthen the aura, and create a positive energy field that repels negative energy. As a healing stone, garnet is used to relieve skin conditions, especially inflammations (wear next to your skin that needs healing), and regulates heart and blood.
