Fun in the Sun

Summer is just around the corner!  My favorite time of year, though I’m also becoming quite fond of the Texas Sprin g & Fall.  But honestly, I like it warm. That’s why I moved here!  With summer comes outdoor activities… and here are some tips to help you make the most of your time outside:

  • Water. Drink water or other fluids. regularly.  Lots of it.  If you are thirsty, you are already 10% dehydrated.  This can lead to muscle cramps and irregular heart rhythms.  Helps keep your body temperature regulated.
  • Vitamin D.  Spend 10-15 minutes/day outside without sunscreen to get your daily dose of vitamin D. After that, slather the sunscreen on!
  • Electrolytes.  If you are a heavy sweater in the heat, you might consider taking in more electrolytes.  Loss of these through sweating can increase muscle cramping, and a decrease how well the body functions.
  • Be outside in non-peak heat.  Mornings or evenings.  Afternoons, aside from peak radiation from the sun, tend to be most challenging.
  • Light colored clothing.  Stores less heat.  Dark colored clothing keeps it. Mosquitos are also drawn to the darker colors.

A deeper look at Pilates

By now, most people have heard of Pilates. It is a method of strengthening the core (muscles of the spine, pelvis, shoulder girdle & neck) in a systematic fashion.  Having taught Stott Pilates  for over 6+ years now (I taught a different style prior to this), the most common thing that I see is a lack of body awareness or understanding of the body in the participants.  Joseph Pilates, the founder, had a saying: in 10 sessions you will feel different, in 20 sessions, other people will see a difference, and in 40 sessions, you will have a new body.  If you’re not seeing a difference, then you need to take a deeper look at how you are doing the exercises.  Is the transverse abdominis (deepest ab muscle) truly engaged through the whole exercise? Is your range of motion appropriate for keeping that transverse abdomins engaged? Can you feel the difference between neutral spine/pelvis & imprint?  How do you breathe while you are doing the exercises, and how does the neck feel?  These questions address the basic principles of Stott Pilates, and deepen your experience/understanding. Adding Pilates in one day per week can have a significant impact on your core strength, your posture, and keep the rest of your body healthier. This month, I”m offering free Pilates mat or tower sessions (30 minutes) to help you understand your body better.

Expanding your vocabulary

Here’s a very important New Word that most of us need to add into our daily vocabulary: “No.”  As in, “No, I am in need of some down time even though I would love to help you out.”  The inability to say No can lead to excess stress. Think of all you have crammed into your daily schedule, and then because you say “yes”, you (may) add even more. It is perfectly OK to tell people “No.”  I admit that I have to use it to keep myself healthy (oooo, is that such a bad thing?), though of late I seem to have forgotten this New Word. As you start to learn and use this New Word, please be gentle to the recipient of it.  Said with too much glee, it can come across as sarcastic, hurtful, or just plain humorous. What is your intended effect?  Remember, you have the right to put yourself and your health/sanity first. You have the right to manage your own schedule. You can use “No” with your friends and co-workers and they will still be around.  If you add an explanation of why you said No, it may go over even better.

Benefits of sports massage before & after your event

Some people think of massages as relaxing; that is only one type of massage. Sports massage helps increase your circulation, allowing your body to recover more readily, get vital nutritients to your hard-working muscles, and calm the central nervous system.  This type of massage is a bit more vigorous and more up-tempo, creating the circulatory effect. Prior to an athletic event, use this to help get your body (and mind?) ready for the event. This massage is typically given up to 2 weeks prior to the event. You want to find out how far out is best for you during season. Performance just after a massage can actually decline a little. Another massage therapist referred to it as a “loopy” state where you’ve released muscle tension, and the body just doesn’t quite know what to do with itself. A light training session the day after a massage is OK.  Some people don’t experience loopy either.  Getting massages during training can help maximize your training benefits, and help you figure out how far out from your race you need to receive your massage.

After your event, the sports massage helps you recover more quickly, again through circulatory effect.  Those muscles you pushed just a little bit more than usual need increased blood flow, and the connective tissues need to be released (unbound) so the muscles can glide smoothly over each other and with the other tissues.  The massage enables you to get back to training faster. Post-event massages should be done either right after (focused on releasing specific muscles & areas of tension without going too deep, & on stretching), or a deeper sports massage can be received after about 2 days.  A deeper massage prior to this time may get into the muscles and delay your recovery – that muscles soreness you feel after a race or intense training session is from microscopic tears in the muscle fibers themselves, and deep work can open these tears up even more.

Everything under the Moon

I’m looking for someone to do a trade: Hair stylist that knows how to cut long hair (I’ll refer to it as the “twirl” method). I’ve got a friend helping me at the moment, but getting our schedules to mesh regularly is chaotic at best. Body work for hair work.  Anyone interested?

Please remember, and be kind to your massage therapist. I deal with several clients a day, and if someone comes in sick, this means not only the possibility of me getting sick, but my other clients as well. Even though I wash/sanitize my hands regularly before, during & after sessions, some germs just don’t give up. If I catch it, I will be unable to help those that need my services. Please be pro-active! Thanks.

I’ve got 3 weekends in a row coming up that I’m scheduled to work, presenting certifications & workshops.  I’m realizing that with the start of Triathlon season and serious trianing on top of this weekend work, I need more time off to stay fully functional.  If the workshops make, I’ll be taking off the following Monday & Tuesday.  If you have anything scheduled, I’ll contact you as soon as I have confirmation of the workshops making.

Coming out of hibernating

Spring is about to be sprung, and are you ready to be in the great outdoors of Austin?  For many people, the winter months are a time to get cozy inside, and activity level goes down.  As you start to get more active as the weather gets warmer, here’s a few suggestions to break yourself in slowly and keep yourself healthy:

  • Start with small segments of being physically activity.  Tackling the whole yard the first time, if you’ve done nothing, might leave you more sore than you want to be.  Gradually building time on task over a few days or weeks helps your body adapt more readily.
  • Dress in layers. Its still cool in the mornings; when the sun goes down in the evenings, so does the temperature.  As you start moving around, you’ll warm up, so being able to take layers off (and the ability to put them back on) help you regulate your temperature better so you reduce your risk of that Spring-time cold.
  • Drink plenty of water. We don’t think about staying hydrated as much when the temps are cooler, but dehydration can creep up on you.  If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Keep water handy… be wary of the caffeniated drinks – they can increase dehydration if you’re not used to them.

New service: Reiki

I’m in the process of finishing my work to be a Reiki Master.  What is Reiki? “… a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by ‘laying on hands’ and is based on the idea that an unseen ’life force energy’ flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s ‘life force energy’ is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy” (www.reiki.org).

I’ve been doing energy work for several years. Reiki has ritualized the process for me, and made it so I can feel the energy moving more readily through the rituals & symbols. I can still incorporate my Native American teachings into a session, the difference is that I may open the session with the calling in of Reiki.

Everything under the Moon

  • Life is getting back to normal – only have 1 weekend in March where I’m presenting for AFAA, so I’ll be available for appointments on Monday afternoons/evenings & on Fridays.  Yeah!  I’m ready to be home.
  • The Northwest YMCA is hosting a Health Fair on Saturday, March 20 from 10-1.  I’ll be there doing chair massages, and I might see if i can take my Pilates Chair for demo purposes.  Come by and get a quick chair massage for neck/shoulder/back. ”The chair massage you gave me helped relieve a lot of my back and neck pain.  Even though it was only about 20 minutes, because you are able to get deeply into the muscles that are tensed up, it felt better than what most masseuse are able to accomplish in an hour.” from SS.
  • Have a place of business where people might benefit from chair massages?  Let’s talk!
  • I’ve been asked to be swim coach for the CapTex Team Survivor, and will be working some lovely ladies from mid-March through the Danskin Triathlon in June.  Trainings will be on Tuesday (8-9p) and Friday (6-7p) so I won’t be available for sessions on those evenings until after Danskin.
  • I seem to have lost several of my regular monthly massage clients to the economy.  What would it take to get you coming back? Let me know, I’m curious, and open to suggestions!  I realize we all have to prioritize; I want to know what will make your sessions with Amber Moon Studio move up on that list.
  • My newsletters are getting shorter as I try to be more effective in the use of your time. Feel free if you give me feedback on them, and if you prefer them to be longer.
  • I’m getting ready to do more continuing education for my massage license.  Anything you’d like to see me offer?

Have a heart – and a healthy one at that!

Valentine’s day is coming, and while we often express our emotional hearts to those close to us, do you think about the state of your own physical heart?  Improving the condition of your heart is important so you can maintain your health and enjoy a longer, more productive life.  Your heart is a muscle, and like any another muscles in your body, it responds to training. Your heart needs to be able to handle minor stresses and recover quickly – the more quickly it can recover, the more efficient and effective it is at serving you.

So how do you make a healthy heart?  Be active (notice I said active instead of exercise please).  If you get up and move for an accumulated 30 minutes each day, your heart improves, as does your overall health.  Risk factors for heart disease go down – also very important.  What are these risk factors? High blood pressure, high cholesterol, impaired fasting glucose levels (>100), obesity, sedentary lifestyle.  Two risk factors that being active will have a lesser impact on are family history (I hope you picked your parents wisely) and if you smoke.  If you want to improve your heart health beyond this, then you need to work a little bit more vigorously – working in a target heart rate zone designated to help you achieve your goals.

This month, I’m offering free medical history and activity consultations to help you find out what you can do to improve the state of your heart.

Everything under the Moon

Amber Moon Studio is closed on Mondays & all but 1 Friday (2/8) for the month of February.  I’ll be sending out reminders & confirmations, and any other info related to your appointments, on Monday evenings.  I’m presenting most of the weekends in February, and therefore and working on Friday, and am in dire need to 1 day off – Mondays!

Group Exercise Instructor Training, starting in March 2009.  Learn to teach group fitness classes and prepare to pass the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification.  Times will be 6:30-8p, Thursdays TBA.

Important items to consider/remember before your bodywork:

  • If you are sick, or think you are, please reschedule.  Be kind to your therapist & the other clients I come in contact with.
  • Prior to bodywork, no pain medicines or alcohol. This can deaden your sense of pain, I can go to deep.  If you have alcohol & bodywork, I can lose my license. Same for recreational drugs.

Northwest YMCA is doing a Valentine’s Day raffle with proceeds going to the Partner of Youth campaign.  I’ve donated 1 session .  Buy in to the raffle, you might get it or some other goodie!

Aromatherapy

Why Choose Essential oils

Essential oils offer a wide variety of health benefits such as physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. It encompasses over 9000 years of history that supports, exemplifies and solidifies the therapeutic properties essential oils have to offer. It is also fun and empowering as it put control back in YOUR hands over YOUR health choices.

Aromatherapy Benefits

Essential oils are powerful tool that may alter, shift, change and adjust mood, emotion and physical issues. It has been historically known to help alleviate stress, skin irritations, depression and anxiety. It also helps our pets achieve over wellness. All 100% pure essential oils are antibacterial. They vary in other properties such as antiviral, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and so on. Today, we are going to talk about those oils that are all 4 — antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-infectious.

Olfaction Process

Essential Oils have historically been shown to calm and relax emotions as well as enhance focus, attention and memory. To understand this, first it is best to be familiar with the olfaction process. The nose is a protrusion of the brain. Scent enters the body in less than 1 second and travels to the pituitary and hypothalamus to tell your body how to respond to a situation. It will help to relax or stimulate. This message is then sent to the rest of the body via the nervous system. Scent actually dictates how we taste. It is the only sense that does not have to go through the digestive tract or spinal cord to be processes. It immediately goes to the brain and elicits a response. It is also important to note that Richard Axel and Linda Buck (both from the USA) won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of odorant receptors and their relationship to the organization of the olfactory system.

Studies

There have been numerous studies done to show that the scent of lavender, when inhaled, affects the beta waves thus reducing stress and promoting calmness. Lavender has been historically used to help Alzheimer patients remain calm, relaxed, stay “here in the moment” longer.” Ref 1
