May 2018: what… how… already??????

Post-race warming up & coffee w our #TeamCrazy. Photo courtesy of Farrah Keeler

My athletes & I participated in the Wanderlust Half Marathon & 10k at the beginning of April, and one of my athletes posted on Facebook the quote below. For those of you that wonder why I get up so  early, go to bed so early, arrange my schedule the way I do… this is why. I just had to share.

“Today I ran a race. It was cold and windy and at times hard, but I’m happy with my race. But my post today isn’t about the race. And my favorite pictures today aren’t from the actual race. They are with these amazing people. Those that were there before, during, and after the race. My #teamcrazy crew that trains with me at 5am on hills…. I keep saying running isn’t a solo sport. And after the past twenty-four hours, I believe it even more. It’s about working together, believing in goals, and cheering one another on through the good runs and the bad. I am even more grateful for this ragtag group of people who have come into my life and have given me so much. Love you all.” – Farrah Keeler

I posted my race report on the AMS facebook page (scroll down til you get to the 4/8/18 entry). All the fun stuff gets posted on that page. Feel free to follow it! The fluffys also have their own page, if you want to stay up with their shenanigans.

Schedule update

I’m working on shifting my schedule to make the Tuesday workday a little bit shorter (but keeping all slots), so I’ve closed tuesdays down for a bit until it gets settled. Should be by Monday, 5/7. Also a reminder I’ll be away from the Studio May 17-22. Please mark your calendars if you are weekly.
I  AM working Memorial Day afternoon. I’ve got space for 1 more client if you’re looking. It should be open on my online scheduler soon.

Pilates classes

Still got the special going on – 4 consecutive classes /$40, new participants only. Come give it a try! Wednesdays at 530p, Thursdays at 10a.
That’s all I got this month since its already started… I’ll get back to the regularly scheduled newsletter for June!

April 2018: Spring Cleaning

So you may have noticed the state of flux here at the Studio of late, as I’m minimizing what I’ve got, reducing down to what I need. One of my athletic sponsors has helped me immensely with this – Love Your Space Organizing.  The more organized I am, the more time I can spend… training… playing w fluffyfluffys… gardening… tending my flower pots/beds… having fun. I have known Ryan Lanier, the owner, for years – met her through the Northwest YMCA triathlon program. Through this organizing work, she has really made me think about all my stuff. If I didn’t love it, I thanked it for being in my life, and let it go. We started with the master closet, then kitchen, then the office (which is again in flux as I cleared out & gave away my 4 drawer file cabinet, ahhhhhh).  I’ve not missed anything I’ve let go. As we organized all these spaces, we spent $0…we used all my current bins, baskets, etc., either from that particular area or other areas of the house.

Here’s some BR & AR shots of my closet…

BR: before Ryan

AR: after Ryan

I’ve let this be the foundation, and I’ve changed a few things (the rolls of towels look great, but take up a LOT of space), but mostly, it’s still like this. Ryan started me on this path, and then I’ve kinda taken it on myself. Some people just need a push (me), others need her constant guidance. And either is fine.

It is a big step to minimize, let go of “stuff”, so if you want to start smaller, she also offers several Sunday Basket Paper Organizing workshops. This workshop let’s you stick your toe in, test the

waters out, see what all this goodness is about. Coming up this month, she’s got:

  1. Sun, April 22, 4:30-6p: learn The Sunday Basket System live & in person! ($30)
  2. Sun, April 22, 7-8:30p, learn The Sunday Basket System via webinar ($30)

Start with these, then decide if you’re ready to really LOVE your space.

You may not have met Ryan yet, but if you’ve been on my website, you’ve seen her – she’s my Pilates equipment model.

She’s also got a “Give Where you Live” page on her website about donating items, which I think is a GREAT resource!

Regular slot for weekly Pilates available

One of my weekly clients had to shift her appt time, and now I’ve got a 1p Thursday weekly slot available for Pilates only. Because of the way the day is structured, I cannot consistently do any form of body work here (I’d get almost no lunch or down time from 10a-4p). If this time works for you & you wanna give it a try, let me know ASAP!

Pilates classes for April & the 4/$40 special

I picked up a new person from the February special, and heard rumblings from some other people, so I’ll run it again for April – new people only, $40 for the month. New participants only.

Are you a current participant? Refer someone, and when they complete all 4 in the month, you get a class FREE!

$12 per class if you pay for the month, drop in rate is $15 per class. There will be 4 classes each for Wed evening & Thurs morning session. I’m not missing any days for a while.

Class numbers policy applies:

  • if 2 people, ea person will be charged for 2 class sessions (making it a duet, regular price of $30, so you saves you up to $6)
  • if 1 person, option to do a private ($60, or 5 class session value) or cancel.
  • I will verify the attendance about 12 hours prior, and let you know so you have a choice.
  • Sometimes people get sick last minute, so I’ll send out a notice later than 24 h in these instances.

Amber Moon Athletics

There is another jersey order going in soon. If you are interested, please let me know ASAP.

I’ve picked up 2 new sponsors – and added a new page! I’m going to be highlighting 2 sponsors a month, tell you a little about ’em so you can get to know them too. Some made it on the back of my ride jerseys, others will be on the next redesign. My new sponsors are The Loop Running Supply (my peeps get 15% off shoes, 10% off everything else), and Xterra Wetsuits/ Boards (up to 55% off boards & wetsuits; use

March Madness

As Daylight savings draws neigh, my vCita calendar has once again made a mess of my calendar… It is not accounting for DST. i’ve asked they fix this (as have others), but i’m guess i’m gonna have to go in and cancel any repeating appts (ie weekly, every other week, or every third week folks) to get it straightened out. I apologize in advance for any confusion this causes. I’ll add a note when i’m doing this, so the vCita cancellation notice & reschedule notice will tell you what is going on. All in favor of doing away w DST, raise their hand!  On way or another, this will all be sorted out by Saturday. Please know your appt time is as regularly scheduled.

That said, until I get things straightened out, here’s what is available next week. If you are looking for something beyond this, let me know and I’ll see what I’ve got.

  • Mon, 3/12, 415p
  • Tues, 3/13, 8a
  • Wed, 3/14, 245p
  • Thurs, 3/15, 1115a & 1p

I’m gonna keep it short & sweet this month since I’m already running behind, but it got some good stuff for ya for April!

One more item – new Pampered Chef catalog is out, and I’ve got a show going if you want/need anything. There is a virtual catalog, and here’s the link for the show to order on (PARTY CODE: 990922). This is also helping to fundraise for a client’s youngest child that is taking a year out between high school and Univ of Arkansas, participating in the World Race. You can read more about her journey here. From your order, 10-15% of your product total will go to her fundraising, and I am also donating my commission. So that’s gonna be like 25% of your order! We thank you in advance! Here’s a sneak peak of all the NEW products!

February 2018

Pilates class special – for new participants only: February Pilates classes only – $40 for the whole month. Come try it, see what its all about. I put a lot of emphasis on the postural muscles, hip strengthening, then there is the ever-present core work, and we just plain have fun. We’re looking to add some more people to our classes, so YOU get the benefit! Classes are Wednesdays at 530p, and Thursdays at 10a. Classes run about an hour. Please bring a Pilates mat if you have one (Yoga mat will work too in most cases). I do have some you can borrow, but if everybody needed one, there wouldn’t be any extras. I’ve got all the other toys needed – rings, mini stability balls, toning balls, various size blocks. Please reserve your spot w my online scheduler, as space is limited. Bonus for my current Pilates class clients – if you refer a friend & they come for all of February, YOU get a free Pilates class!

If you are on Facebook and want to follow & stay updated on the antics of the fluffyfluffys, they have their own page!

Pilates classes for February

All $12 per class if you pay for the month, drop in rate is $15 per class. There will be 4 classes each for Wed evening & Thurs morning session. I’m not missing any days for a while.

Class numbers policy applies:

  • must have 3 to make a class
  • if 2 people, ea person will be charged for 2 class sessions (making it a duet, regular price of $30, so you saves you up to $6)
  • if 1 person, option to do a private (5 class session value) or cancel.
  • I will verify the attendance about 12 hours prior, and let you know so you have a choice.

Studio policies, tips on the online scheduler

Reminders on Studio policies, so no one is surprised:

  • 24h cancellation policy: Please give 24 hours notice before canceling any appt, or I reserve the right to charge you for a session. Most of the time I accept a notice given before i go to bed (and I go to bed early). I acknowledge there are emergenices & valid reasons for missing, in which case you will not be charged. These are at my discretion.
  • If you are sick or think you are becoming so, please cancel. 24h cancellation policy may not apply.
  • Your appt time starts when scheduled, or within 5 minutes.
  • I do my best to allow 15 min between sessions to give us both a little flexibility. Realize this is not always the case however. Feel free to arrive 0-5 min before the start of your appt.
  • If you arrive late, your appt still ends at the original time unless pre-approved.
  • Massages (1h appts) may run anywhere from 50-70 min, at my discretion, based on your needs & my schedule.
  • Pilates private sessions last 50-55 mins (1 hr appt) and 25-30 min (30 min appt) in most circumstances.
  • Email and/or text confirmations are sent automatically via vCita 2 days before your session. Please make sure you are receiving these in the format you prefer. Email is required for all appts.

Tips for using vCita:

  • add no-reply@vcita.com to your address book so you get your notifications.
  • if you hit the “invite” button on texts/emails, it will automatically put them on whatever calendar you use.
  • When looking for appts, keep in mind the scheduler has a 15 min block before all massages. Not necessarily so for Pilates sessions. If you’re having troubles finding an hour slot, look for a 30 min slot, then book it and ask if there is actually an hour option that is not showing up. I can decline the appt if its not an hour. Realize this may be one of the appts that runs more like 50 min. Friday mornings get this way.

Tips for getting in touch w Sharon:

  • Text/email are way easier since I’m typically short on time between clients. Replying that way is much faster for me then a phone call. Also, thru the vCita system.

Plumeria in Winter

Did you know that Plumeria turn into sticks in the winter? Yep. They drop all their leaves. Mine were a bit confused this year, and I’ve heard some of my vet’s plants were also confused. We both got blooms in December. Crazy, I know!

Plants – $20-25; Seedlings – $5; Packet of 10 seeds – $5. Proceeds go to Austin Dog Alliance. Plants are a variety of colors, and the seedlings/seeds are a Surprise!!! My vet has a plumeria addiction, and they cross pollinate. If you want the donation for your tax write off, please send email me your receipt prior to delivery/pickup. Otherwise cash is preferred. I only keep a few in stock, so let me know what you want something so I can make sure it is here. Current stock: 2 plants (Mardi Gras, and Violet Jack colors), a plethora of seedlings, and several seed packets. Let me know what you want!

February Studio Schedule

For your edification as well as keeping me straight, I list my total work day after the day of the week.  On the bullets following, I list actual studio hours, as well as any classes I teach/coach elsewhere. It may only look like a do a few studio hours some days, but take a look at what surrounds it… You’ll see why my schedule may seem like it have slim open spots!

January 2018: An exciting time of year

Every year, people always ask what my New Year’s Resolutions are. I haven’t made Resolutions in years, cuz if I’m gonna change something, I’m just gonna do it. I don’t need a big grand gesture to start. I know some of you do, and that’s  GREAT! As you’re starting on this change, be thinking about what you’re going to do DAILY to get you there. What will your weekly goals be? Monthly? Most people fail to succeed because they focus on the big goal, without a plan to get you there. So decide on your goal, and then what you realistically CAN do and NEED to do to get there. Need help? If its a fitness/health goal, I can help w weekly wellness coaching sessions – by phone or in person.

January always seems to bring about other changes for me – and this year it is a schedule shift. While I’ve been enjoying my Mondays off, it seems I suddenly have a lot of clients that need Mondays. So I’m opening them up a little bit more. Before you get too excited – Monday is already full. I’ve got 2 regular clients every other Wednesday, so I’m taking the opposing Wednesdays off as office days. The Wed 530p Pilates Class will stay as scheduled. I’m also truncating Fridays so I’m done right before I swim at 12. While I like to have a 15 min break between clients, this may not be the case so I can get the most people in. Thank you for understanding this schedule shift. I need time to get stuff done.  I’ve still got a CranioSacral Therapy written test I need to write. I’ve got continuing ed for tri coaching & my other certs that I need to do. And my desk, somehow, gets cluttered every week, no matter how clean it starts. If anyone is already scheduled in these times, you’re appt time will be honored.

With that said, if you are needing to change your regular slot, please let me know ASAP – this is the time to do it!

December! Already???

Please take the time to take care of YOU this holiday season! Enjoy your time with family & friends.

The athletes that I spend my early morning & Monday evenings with had their first 10k race of the season this past week, at Spicewood Vineyards, which is why this is out late. I wasn’t home much this past weekend. I’m still getting caught up. Of the 7 athletes that went, 5 placed! I’ll take it! Elizabeth & I, being “just” volunteers, had a little bit of free time to kid around and do some shameless self-promotion with the new Amber Moon Studio wear.

As we get into winter, I hear that some of you have a hard time finding the house when the plants move inside. Good news! A favorite and long standing client, Sara, is moving (not the good news), and I’m getting her outdoor potted plants. They are HUGE. I mean 3 or so feet tall, and that’s just the pots. You’ll see ’em. While I’m very sad that she’s leaving, I’m happy that she’s going to be close to her kids & grandkids. She was my first practice massage client when I was in school (Mar 2008), and the rest, as they say, is history. Yep, we’ve been together over 9 years!

“Sharon has helped me with injuries, post-surgery recovery, and general fitness for the past nine years.  I have great respect for her — her professionalism, her knowledge, and her commitment to her clients.  Every time we work together, I know she’ll challenge me and apply new things she’s learned to keep it fresh for me, and we laugh a lot during the process.” Sara M.

Best of luck & health to you in your new adventures, Sara! <3

Reminder as we get into flu & cold season: if you think you are sick, or know you are sick, please cancel. I know you might think a massage would feel good, but you could pass those pesky germs on to me & my other clients. Ditto if you have sick kids.  While I do have a 24hr cancellation policy – if you’re sick, I don’t charge you.

My vet sells plumeria plants, seeds & seedlings, with the proceeds going to the Austin Dog Alliance. I’m helping her out and pimping them here. Plants – $20-25; seedlings – $5; packet of 10 seeds – $5. Plants are a variety of colors, and the seedlings/seeds are a mystery. She’s got a plumeria addiction, and they cross pollinate. Let me know which you want!

Pampered Chef – November fundraiser show for your holiday needs!

I’ll be hosting a Fundraiser for South Texas Persian Rescue this month via the Pampered Chef in addition to the AMS Turkey 10miler. 10-15% of your purchase will go directly to them (depends on size of the show). Why STPR? It’s where I got all 5 of my current fluffys, and the 2 ladies that run it really give a lot. These fluffys are high maintenance, and they take timeenergy and money to bring back to health. Every little bit I can do to help (without adopting any more cats), I do! So plan early! No host items to give away this month, just lots o’ love <3

September! That means fall is just a few months away!

One thing I’ve learned to love about our Texas heat is the Fall. Growing up in Indiana, it was just chilly. With my Maine/New Hampshire, even Alaska vacaction, I’ve a new found appreciation for the slightly cooler temps. Still do not want the Indiana winters, but that crisp fall air…. it also means my running season is coming. I love running in the cooler temps! For some odd reason, I’ve also named my Felt triathlon bike “Blue September”. There’s a quality ot the crispness of air that I just love.

I’ve got 3 more triathlon related events coming up this fall, working toward my 2nd ever IronMan 70.3 in November 2018. There’s a group of us that are taking 18 months to build to it – several have never done anything more than a sprint distance race, and it’s exciting (yes, already!) to see their progress! In September, there is a Sprint Tri in Kerrville, then I’m doing the swim leg (1.2 miles – easy peasy) the next day w 2 of these awesome athletes. Another one will be doing her first Olympic distance tri that same day. In November, I’ll be doing an AquaBike (1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike), and we’ll have a different relay combo. About a month later, we start a 10k road race series we put together through various venues, culminating in a half marathon in March, and 2 of us doing AquaBikes in Galveston, and mixing up the 70.3 relay again.  If YOU would like to be part of this journey – either the running, or the 70.3, let me know! I’m happy to help coach you along!

Run technique work

I’ve had blurbs in these monthly updates about run form work, how about I show you? This is Dana, and these videos were made about 1.5 months apart. One the first one you can see how upright she is, heels staying low. On the second video, you can see a full body lean, she’s picking up her heels & knees more, and just looks more comfortable. How’d she get there? After the first video, I gave her some technique work drills, as well as some specific strengthening exercises for what I saw that needed improvement. Dana is awesome in that she does the exercises, and wa-LA! Her run form has improved. The 2nd video is actually her third session of technique work.

videos to be uploaded momentarily…

I finished Nationals!

Pre-race – what have I gotten myself into???

This race was an experience.  It was on a whole different level – but my goal was to have fun & finish. Standing around, waiting for our turn to warm up at swim start, other athletes were taking, planning on finishing in 2.5hour… here I was, gonna be happy w 3 if i could manage it! In the pic below, you can see the swim start. We warmed up on the back side of this pontoon, then got out, and back in on this side. One hand had to be on the dock to start. What they failed to mention is that when a wave takes off, the whole dock MOVES cuz we are all pushing off on it. The wave before us took of, and we all staggered. I thought it was fun. Water temp was about 80, so no wetsuits allowed (78 or greater, no wetsuits. That’s the rule). I was the only one swimming with a snorkel, so I’d should be easy to find. That said, i can’t find myself in this shot. i might be down farther, but I thought I was close to one of the poles. Actually, I know I was, just not which specifc pole. It’s kinda fun to play “Where’s Waldo/Sharon?”

The swim start

Coming out of the water

Swim felt great. This summer I’ve been able to finally feel like my swimming was consistent in training. I feel I am getting stronger, and continuing to progress. This was my 4th race back after the neck injury & rehab, so I think I’ve still got room to progress. Around Austin, I’ve gotten accustomed, in a wave start like this, to come out fo the water in the top 10% of my age group. At one point in this race, I looked up and it felt like my whole wave was ahead of me, and still pulling away. I did end up passing several people with the same color cap (ie my wave) as I progressed. Coming out of the water I was 47/92 for my age group. Yep, a completely different level then I am used to! Distance: 0.9 miles.

A quick run to the transition area, slip on  my bike shoes, helmet, sunglasses, and off to the 2nd leg. This is Transition 1 (“T1”). I’m also really fast at this. I moved up in ranking as I headed out on the bike.

Heading out of T1 to the bike course

Bike had tailwind out, which you didn’t realize until you hit the turn around at the half way point. Headwind back seriously changed my average bike speed! There was this “big hill”  with a “steep incline” that we had been warned about.  So if you’ve ever driven Lime Creek here in Austin, we have a hill series on there called “The Sisters”. I’ve been training on them in anticipation of this hill. She ended up being a Sister wanna be, but not a contender. I ended up slowing down on the hill cuz a dude passed me at the start of it then pulled in front of me (like he’s supposed to). And then I gained on him. Cuz it was a hill (I eat hills for breakfast!). I was trying to be good and follow rules which meant I should have slowed down & backed out of the passing zone. I shoulda just chicked him. Several people were walking their bikes up this hill, and I passed several that were still on their bikes as well. The down hills were a blast. Nutrition during the bike was spot on, as was hydration, electrolytes and Spruzza misting. The second half of the bike my neck was starting to talk to me – fatigue, some discomfort. I must say I was glad to be done after 25 miles! My bike speed (average) was about what I’ve done at the other 2 races this year, even though the distance was almost double. I’ll take it.

Back into Transition (now “T2”), slip the bike shoes off, run shoes on, grab my fuel belt, and off I go!

Having fun on the run!

Only 6.2 miles of race left!

Got on the the run and the quads cramped. No option but to walk it off. And then I’d start running again and they’d cramp again. Run was 2 loops, so I pretty much power walked the first 1.5, and was finally able to start running on thefinal stretch back. Hence my run time is way slow. I’ve got some rethinking to do on my training, but

overall a great experience. I stuck with my race plan, and am quite

About to finish the race!

happy to have qualified for & finished my first Nationals. Everyone atthis race has their story. Mine has been the consistent neck work it took to even be able to get to this race. To even qualify for it on my 2nd race back. I’m proud of how far I’ve come!

The most important thing for me on this race was to have FUN. And as evidenced by the photos my friend Rejeana took of me while racing, I’d say I was successful!

Next up: prepare to qualify for NEXT year in Cleveland!

Finisher’s medal!
