Hello Sunshine! (8/15/22)

Oh, look. It’s Monday afternoon/evening, and I’m just now typing this. So short & sweet it is!

Firstly, there was an extra week of donation time for my American Red Cross 15 miles of swimming in July, and we ended with a grand total of $633 raised. I appreciate all those that donated. Thank you.

Vini-chair-yoga will be coming on the schedule in September on Thursdays. I’m waiting for a few other things to fall in place before I settle on a time. Interested, and still need to do the survey? Please take a moment and offer your input.

Survey results to date:

  • Thursday lunch-ish time is best
  • 1x/week works best for most, 2 would prefer 2x
  • 30 min was most popular length for class
  • format would be seated in chair and standing postures only
  • half were ok with this staying online, other half said ok to start online & transition to in-person

I’ll be emailing & posting to social media once I’ve got details figured out.

If you want something of a sneak peak as to what it’s like, I’ve opened up all my Yoga >>Meditation classes on YouTube from the past. The ones in the chair are will be similar to this class.. Check ’em out! If you watch them, log in & leave me a comment or thumbs up!

Taylor Track Time – due to it being over 100, I went ahead & canceled it for August only. It will return in September.

Awesome Arms will be going to YouTube only in September. I’ll have them set to Premier on Tues & Thurs at 535p, so you can still join in. There’s not been people joining me via Zoom, and this opens me up to get it in at other times.

Studio closings 2022

Hello, Sunshine

Your bi-weekly guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon (8/1/22).

The American Cancer Society 15 miles in July Swim Challenge

I did it! WE did it! 16.25 miles, $508 raised. And you still have 7 days to donate.

I’m so grateful for those that have already donated, those that sent notes of encouragement, and those on FB that followed along. I admit when I started, I didn’t know if I could raise $200, let alone make it past $500. You made that happen. I applaud you.

I always enjoy a learning experience. What I learned this time is that I really do better with 2 swims per week. I could probably do 3, but if I’m open water swimming, I just wanna GO! So it really depends. I’m going to balance out my activities for August, maybe toss in a bit more deep water jogging if it’s gonna stay this hot or get hotter. I’m already looking at a swim event like this for next year. It may be this one, it may be different. We shall see!

Want to donate yet on Facebook? Paypal, Venmo or Zelle me, please make sure you note what it is for, and I’ll add it for you. Please follow up with a text too.

I did a thing…

On July 31 I finally got my last event I had paid for pre-COVID off the books: Marble Falls Tri. With my knees in their current state, I opted for the AquaBike (in other words, no run) instead of the full sprint triathlon. I didn’t tell many people I was doing this cuz I didn’t know how my knees would do. They don’t like hills (so sad), they don’t like me pushing it. I just didn’t know what I was capable. My training, with the shift from performance to wellness, has also shifted so I couldn’t expect to be my ‘old self’.

I’ve shifted my diet toward low-carb, I had concerns about being able to give this what it needed. Would my system be able to handle any intensity without carbs? Resounding yes to that. I’m still working on my #AmberEats series I’ll be sharing on FB/IG, so be patient. So much learning has happened since I shifted to a wellness focus.

So with all this said, I truly had not idea what the result would be. So I did the only thing I could.

I chose to have FUN.

Yes, swimming 500m hard (oh that was so nice), and then a leisurely walk to transition area, and then a 12mi bike. Yeah, it was fun. I listened. When I was aware of my knees, I backed down. When I felt any tweaks, I backed off. When it felt good & easy, I let myself fly. I was able to really focus on technique, enjoy the beautiful morning, and be out there with friends.

Vini-chair-yoga input please

I’ve gotten a couple responses on my questionnaire on the possibility of a chair yoga class, and looking for a few more. If you’re interested, please remember to complete the form. Not on google drive? Email me and I’ll PDF you the form, and you can send your answers.

I will note that the times I was considering that were the most popular – 1215p T/Th – have been filled. So I’ll have to figure out another time. Until then, I encourage you to try some of my past Viniyoga>>Meditation classes on YouTube. These are 30 minutes long, which seems to be the preferred class length.

CST for TMJ

Craniosacral therapy is also magnificent for TMJ issues. While I’m currently not doing the in the mouth work due to COVID, I’ve got new techniques I find just as effective. Keep in mind, that TMJ issues may not always come from the jaw, but other areas of the body as it’s all connected. I previously had TMJ issues myself, which resolved with CST. I’ve had several clients come in & get their issues resolved.

Come in, give it a try! See what this is all about.

Schedule your session here in Taylor or at the studio in Austin.

The current state of COVID

If you’ve been following what’s going on with COVID (you might be burned out on info, I get it), you know the current dominant strain is highly contagious. YES masks are still required. They need to be N95, KN95 or K94. Surgical & cloth masks aren’t going to cut it. Please have them on when you walk in the door. Masks should also be well fitted – if you’re glasses fog, they need to be adjusted. I’m constantly tweaking mine right when I put it on, although I’ve gotten much better at knowing exactly how it needs to go. Remember if you can smell anything through your mask, it’s not well fitted. If yours doesn’t meet these requirements, I’ll have one you can buy (and keep) for $5.

Funny story – while on vacation in June, I was waiting for a gas station restroom to come available. As the person that just used it walked out he commented, “You probably don’t want to go in there right away.” I was confident in my mask fit, and didn’t smell anything. How’s that for getting it right?

Vini-chair-yoga input please

As promised – a questionnaire on the possibility of a chair yoga class, in the style of viniyoga. Your input, if you are interested, will be most helpful in the design & implementation of this program. If you know of someone that is interested, but not yet one of my clients/students, please forward this to them. Thank you for your input!

The Swim Challenge

Half way through July, and I’m at 12.98 of my 15 miles. I did my second 2.4 mile open water swim this past Saturday, and I should get to 15 this coming Thursday. I’m well ahead of schedule! After two weekends of that same swim, I need a lighter weekend before my arms fall off (hahahahaha). I’ll have to see if I think I can reach 20 before EOM.

I’ve also reached the initial goal of fundraising $200, and have challenged myself to reach for $500. I’m currently at $298. I genuinely appreciate those of you that have donated.

Cancer touches so many lives these days. You may think you only know a few people that have had it, but once you stop & really start thinking… that list gets very long. I know mine has.

The American Cancer Society is leading the fight for a world without cancer. They’re finding cures and doing so much more.

• They’re supporting patients with free lodging near hospitals, free rides to treatment, and our live 24/7 cancer helpline.

• They’re providing information, tools and services to help people cope with the challenges and questions that come with a cancer diagnosis.

• They’re making breakthroughs in research and urging lawmakers to improve access to care. When it comes to cancer, American Cancer Society is the only organization attacking from every angle.

There’s still plenty of time to donate, but do it now while you’re thinking of it. It all adds up. Donate at https://www.facebook.com/donate/519029383297984/. Not on Facebook? Paypal, Venmo or Zelle me, please make sure you note what it is for, and I’ll add it for you. Please follow up with a text too.

CST for Migraines

Did you know Craniosacral therapy (CST) is an alternative remedy for migraines?

I’ve had several clients come in with migraines, and in a few sessions, it’s gone. And doesn’t return. Sometimes is something structural causing the migraines. Sometimes is something in another part of the body causing the migraines. Regardless, CST helps.

Every client is different. Some need more sessions. Some need only a few. Some I’ve not even worked on the head. Some are done in 30 min (typical session is 1h). If you have migraines, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

CST:
– reset the nervous system
– works from the inside out
– can work directly on the brain & central nervous system
– addresses the skeletal system-
– brings everything back in to sync
– works on multiple levels

Let me help you move from a place of depletion to resilience to vitality.

Schedule your session here in Taylor or at the studio in Austin.

Taylor openings – massage, Pilates, CST, online, etc.

Just a note… when it’s over 100* outside (heck over 90-95 even), I’m not putting the fans in the windows. I refuse to kill my electric bill. Doh. I’ll have the HEPA air filters cranked & running full blast before & after you, and on medium while you’re in session. I still clean thoroughly between sessions. Thanks for understanding.

Happy ID4, Sunshine!

Holiday Monday blues

I’m always grateful for Mondays. I’m weird (so I’m told) in that I love Mondays. It’s my “prep day”- I get a lot of work done, still have plenty of down time, and get as prepared for my week as I can. I catch up on computer stuff, and this summer I’ve been doing an online course on Mondays as well.

So when a holiday falls on a Monday, I still gotta do all my regular stuff. Plus have a little fun. I already went swimming. It was awesome. I’ve got a few additional house things accomplish today. That course I’m taking is postponed this week so I can have a little fun.

And it’s hot. I admit, I’m ready for fall. I think most of you would agree!

The Swim Challenge

My first 3 swims are DONE. As of Saturday 7/2, 14% of the way to my 15 miles…

MATCHING DONATION Challenge thru 7/10/22

Guess how many miles I will swim during Week 2 (7/4-7/10), closest without going over, and I will MATCH your donation, up to $20. I’ve got 2 pool swims & 1 open water swim scheduled. That’s all the hint you get.

Step 1: make your donation
Step 2: email/text/PM me with the distance you think I’ll swim.
Step 3: watch for a post next Sunday with my total miles & the amount I donated.

Donation link: https://www.facebook.com/donate/519029383297984/. Not on FB? You can PayPal/Venmo/Zelle me your donation & I’ll make it for you. Please make sure you let me know some way (text/email/pm) that you sent it, cuz while I love $$$ mysteriously appearing in my account, I’d like to know where it’s suppose to go!

Classes & Group shenanigans for the weeks of July 4 & 11, 2022

I’m processing… with my knees… for my knees… I’m debating adding a vini-chair-yoga class in the fall. Next Hello, Sunshine I’ll have a questionnaire & more info for you. I’ve not been a big fan of chair yoga – teaching it that is – and feeling it is time to stretch myself. September will probably be a “trial run”. If that’s something you’re interested in, feel free to reach out now and let me know. It’s nothing more than something knocking around in my skull at the moment.

Hello Sunshine! (6/20/22)

Oh my knees

If you’re on FB/IG, you saw my post about my knees. If you’re not there, or you missed it… I have now gotten 1 round of steroid shots in each knee. Yeah, bone on bone – albeit, in different places. Osteoarthritis. Has it changed what I do in class? I don’t think it has. I think the years of the right one being so swollen changed it more. I am more mindful of what I’m doing with them, and stepping away & letting YOU do the movements more during classes as needed. It’s gonna be a “see how it goes” kind of a thing. I’m adapting. I’m learning. I’ve got a great support team. And I’m grateful it’s summer, so I can SWIM & bike more.

Speaking of swimming…

I signed up for the American Cancer Society 15 mile swim challenge for July. Last week I learned one of my past athletes lost her battle with inflammatory breast cancer. A beautiful flame, extinguished. I was doing the challenge because I love swimming. Now it’s dedicated to Alex. The fundraiser for this is via Facebook, but if you’re not on and would like to donate, you can venmo (@SharonBoon) or PayPal me (please make a note it’s for ACS/swim), and I’ll add it for you. I’ll be cross posting on my social media pages as I go thru this journey.

Playing with my food – and learning a lot

Earlier this Spring, I started reading Grow a new body by Alberto Villoldo. I have thoroughly enjoyed his Shaman work, and this was no exception. But it was about food. I took several months to really integrate his teachings before doing his week long dietary detox. I learned bunches about myself, and that I might be “carbohydrate intolerant”. That’s really no bueno when you’re athletic. It’s all part of my shift to wellness. So now I’m re-reading this book as well as follow up material to learn more about things I have questions on. And the reading list grows…. I’ll be posting more about this journey over on social media using the #AmberEats tag.

Hello Sunshine!

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 5/23/22.

In keeping with the last Hello Sunshine‘s theme of change… I’m starting to finally settle some of the chaos in my home/studio. And spending as much time OUTSIDE as I can. That’s not new, but it’s still just awesome. If I’ve got the fan going on the back porch, I don’t mind it in the upper 90s. I started the garage re-organization again so I can get projects going out there as well. Just finished sanding my new kitchen table & oiling it today – it gets to sit overnight, then 1 more coat. It really is quite exciting have the Great Room & kitchen walls all 1 color, and the bathroom will follow suit shortly. I got a small garden in for this year, and working on a 2nd raised bed for fall planting. Lots of good stuff happening, and it’s making this house feel more & more like my home.

Wednesday Massage & CST at the Austin Studio will now have a what-will-appear-to-be-random-but-it’s-not new time slot at 1p. Because of summer vacations of my regulars, it’s a little wanky at the moment as others book appointments, but there will be a 1p session start every other Wednesday. At the moment, some of them are 30 min – I’ve indicated these below (see Austin: Massage & CST for dates). This is a trial run lasting the summer – I need to see if I can get done with class at 1145a, have lunch, and be out there door & at the new location for 1230-1240p to allow for set up & settle down from the drive time. And a new location starting 6/1/22.

I’m also shifting Awesome Arms a little bit… read on below.

Awesome Arms *UPDATE*

I’m loving this work out, even with my little case of tennis elbow. I’m switching formats though starting 5/30/22 (that’s next week). I’m not getting engagement on Facebook, so I’m going to shift it to Zoom & YouTube only. Still free, or $4… package still available. You choose.

Hello Sunshine

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 5/9/22.

It’s only May. Why is it so hot? I feel so fortunate that last year was the best possible year, really, for Massage: The Driveway Series to have occurred. We were so fortunate.

A few weeks ago I booked a later client at the Austin indoor studio – and that wiped me out. I’m finding there’s a huge energetic difference between working indoors & out. Back in April, I also had 2 driveway sessions after a full day indoors, and it didn’t wipe me out. Learning. Always learning.

my flock’s way of telling me “Happy Mother’s Day” – they sit close.

No, that doesn’t mean I’m moving things outside again. It just means I’m spending my down time outside. When I’m home, all my meals are on the back porch. When I’m in Austin, I’m taking a book, sitting outside between clients & reading. It’s just delightful. As long as I’m shaded & in a breeze, I’m good.

I’ve do have 2 open slots on Wednesday evenings in Austin for those wanting to brave the heat. We’ll see how long I keep those.

I hope those of you with 2 legged/4 legged, human/feathered/furred kids had a Happy Mother’s Day!

Hello Sunshine (4/25/22)

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 4/25/22.

I had to set my ego aside.

Instead of focusing on performance, I’m shifting my personal focus to wellness.

At the beginning of last week, I made a thoughtful decision. I would not do the Glacier Half Marathon as I’ve been dreaming of for 3 years. I can postpone my registration. I’ve got more important things to focus on with myself. Really allowing the knee to heal and let it tell me when it’s good to go, without pushing it. Figuring out my nutrition for anything over 90 min of training, and my food issues in general.

I’ve been an athlete for so long, I admit my personal image is tied up in that. So to make the mental shift, I really had to have some serious integrating time. It started on my staycation at the beginning of April. I’ve been practicing the CST stuff I’ve been learning on myself, and I had a workshop with The Way of the Heart. It all is affecting me. Positively. Allowing for growth.

Wellness. It’s such a nebulous concept incorporating so many things – the physical body (“fitness”) is just one component. It’s time for me to step back with myself as my own client and figure out what is best serving me.

Yoga has the concept of sunrise, mid-day, and sunset years. Sunrise is about building the body. Mid-day is about balancing life. Sunset is about the quality of the mind. I think I just firmly stepped into the mid-day years. Focusing on balance. Focus on all aspects of me. Wellness. To ensure that I’m able to have the longevity of movement & quality of life that I choose.

What all this means for me: honoring my body. No longer pushing the limits. Still improving, but without the strive for performance goals.

Hello Sunshine!

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 4/11/22

Vacation. I only remember a handful growing up. I remember a lot of people I knew going on vacations and I remember being slightly envious of the high schoolers that got to go the Caymans for Spring Break. Not necessarily of their destination, but the fact they got to go somewhere. In talking with mom these past few years, the only thing she regrets is not taking more vacations.

Now, I can’t afford not to take vacations. With the highly regulated schedule and physically demanding work I do, I need the break – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. I think it was after my first real vacation maybe a decade ago that I realized this was going to be essential. Before COVID altered life, I’d gotten to a pattern of a quarterly vacation. Sometimes a workshop was included, and it’d be in an interesting location (Montana, New Hampshire to name a few). I don’t want all my vacations to have a work component, but it makes for an interesting time.

What I realized this vacation is that I really need to get away during these times. Yes, I moved on my March vacation last year – not sure I’d really call that a vacation, but it was time away from my regular schedule, and that’s what was needed. In the first part of COVID, I didn’t take a vacation til September – that was a little long. Even with working fewer hours at that point, I needed time away. This is the first year I’ve got my quarterly vacations pretty much mapped out again.

Vacations really aren’t a luxury that I once thought they were. They are, for me at least, a necessity.
