The Quack Pack

We are so glad you reached out.

  • Head coach: Sharon Boon
  • Asst coach: Stephanie Escobar

Our beginnings story

Stephanie accidentally ran into Sharon a little over three years ago (2021).  She was running on her own with a plan she purchased online.  Steph saw Sharon working with some folks at the track and stopped to talk with her.

The rest is history as they say.

Stephanie says, “She has catapulted my running (I qualified and ran Boston) and encouraged me to get back into triathlons, which I am enjoying more than ever.  We built both our athlete-coach relationship and friendship over the past three years.  I am following her lead in giving back to our community and supporting all athletes we can find around here. “

Our Quack Pack is starting to blossom, and we hope you choose to be a part of it!

What is the schedule for training for running, swimming, and cycling?

We are a new club as of May 2024, and work in conjunction with the City of Taylor (TX).

Currently, we have track sessions on Tuesdays & Thursdays 630p. The city’s track (just in front of the Parks & Rec office) is currently being resurfaced (finished Jan 2025), so we are running from Bull Branch Park, and working on a variety of streets. Cost is $5 per, or $40/10 punch card. You can purchase online (fitness punch pass) or on site (cash).

Club membership is required to participate after your 1st session. You will need lights for safety – this one is front & back, visible from all sides, and the nice bright front light so you can see the road.

This past summer we had our first season of master’s swim on Tu & Th in lieu of running in upper 90/over 100 degrees of heat. The pool is, sadly, seasonal, and also in the process of getting rebuilt (totally new), so some of us swim at Clay Madsen Rec Center when we are in Round Rock. We swim our own thing. If you want some swim plans, I can help with that (see individual coaching below).

The Parks & Rec director mentioned trying to get the pool open more when the new one is built (finished mid-summer 2025). We’ll just have to wait & see. Plan will be to have Stroke clinic & Masters swim in the future. Hopefully the ability for personal tri swim lessons too.

Biking – 2 options – these are free

1) Blur cycleworks, just past Clay Madsen on Gattis school. If you want the Mr Myagi of bikes, Eric (owner) is your man. They have a Tuesday group ride. and then a Saturday ride (must be able to ride 18-19mph for 50 miles).  He will be starting a 35 mile group at a slower pace (projected March 2025). Sharon sent Stephanie to work with him, and her cycling ability has been transformed. I suggest asking her for more specifics.

2) Taylor Bike shop offers a Sunday ride, it started out more leisurely, but there has been interest in a more serious group.

Do we train together on the weekends? Weekdays?

We train together on weekdays mostly.

Sharon is recovering from 2 knee replacements (12/22 & 10/23), and still getting back up to speed, and honestly, her Amber Moon Studio (which this is under) is so highly scheduled that she wants to get out and train at her leisure on weekends.

Stephanie also needs to focus on her competitive training, and rides with Blur on weekends. She’s faster than most of us when she’s running easy and we are running hard, so she does that on her own as well.

Occasionally, we have planned something.  We do have several members that ride, depending on what level you are for, we may be able to see if they can group ride. Most of our club folks do 1 thing at this point – swim, or run… a few bike, but that doesn’t seem to be their emphasis except for Texas Mamma Jamma (Sept).  Taylor is small. We’re introducing them to the multisport lifestyle slowly.

Is The Quack Pack in conjunction with the Amber Moon Studio?

Yes, Sharon offers a lot of things through AMS, including individual coaching, if you need. I also have several athletes I do strength/rehab programs for, & issue specific bodywork as needed. We can chat if needed. I’m big on injury prevention, athlete education, and technique.

TQP also has a middle school component, as Sharon coaches MS cross country & track in Austin, and offers them of-season programs.

What is the process for joining the club and are there any mandatory requirements that the club upholds in terms of competing in races, participation in practices, etc.?

To join, complete this form. Cost is $20, and is good thru end of 2025 at this point in the year.

No mandatory requirements at this point. We do have a list of club events we’d like people to join in on, but not required. We’ve got a Thanksgiving day run at Brushy Creek, Spicewood vineyards 5k/10kHM (Dec ’24; discount code available), and Run for the Roses  5k/10k here in Taylor (Jan ’25) confirmed. We do our best to pick events that have multiple distances so we can get the most people going.
