Tis the holiday season, and next year looking merry & bright!

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, 12/17/2023

I’m officially into outpatient PT. I’m so far ahead of the curve, she’s having fun with me. My first day was evaluation, and there was a 6 min walk test – “we’re gonna run out of sidewalk” and “we won’t need to retest this at the end”. They were impressed that I’m already walking a mile and biking outdoors for 30 minutes. Upon finding out I was a runner/triathlete, she did asked me if I tried running yet. Ooooo…. don’t tempt me!

Alas, no I have not.

I’m 7 weeks out as of 12/18. I think that’s a little early to be running. My bones are still healing. I do have to regularly remind myself regularly that I’m only “X” weeks post-op.

I feel I’m doing a pretty good job balancing getting my home rehab, the cardio, work AND rest in. I’m ready for the next short break that Christmas brings, and at the moment Dec 27-29 are light (I’ll gladly fill it though!), so I get some down time, and time to prep for 2024.

So what’s on my agenda for 2024? Get stronger at walking & biking. Keep swimming. 1-2 Aquabike events. Expand my horizons with coaching middle school track, and coach cross country again in the fall. Get a better spring & fall garden than last year. Grow more of my own food. Finish painting tasks in the house. Keep up with my accounting. Get the hall (studio) bath updated. Play more. Hike more (likely a fall endeavor). Continue to grow the studio. Maybe a return to teaching an in-person class or 2. Get ready to start running in 2025.

What’s on your list? I’d love to hear!

Holiday hours

I’m taking off December 25 & 26, and January 1. Otherwise, studio is open as usual. Yes, I’ll be in Austin on Wednesdays, 1-6ish.

Classes

Except for Tues, 12/26, classes run as normal. No track 12/26 or 28. Everything resumes 1/2/24.

Just a note that track will run thru 1/18 (Th), and then take a break until March. This program is now run thru City of Taylor – $5/session or $40 for 10 on their fitness punch pass.

Personal sessions are available during the break time.

Taylor & Virtual sessions

The week of Dec 18 is currently running FULL. Last minute openings happen. Please check my scheduler or reach out.

Upcoming openings

  • Wed, 12/27, I could be talked into a 1145a if the 1P in Austin doesn’t get booked.
  • Thurs, 12/28, 330p
  • Fri, 12/29, 145 or 2p

Austin Studio

It’s almost here – more Austin studio days/times! Starting Jan 5, I’ll be there every other Friday 130-4, or so. Some weeks it’s already flexed a little based on what else I’ve got going on. So if you are looking for a regular slot (or an irregular one!) and not seeing an opening on Wednesday, here’s your chance. I’ve got Fridays in the scheduler thru March 1, so you no longer have to go thru me. It is a bit of computer work for me to get Fridays in, so I’m only going to have 1-2 months open at a time. Act now and get your Friday slot ASAP!

Upcoming Austin openings

  • Wed, 12/27, 1p, 330p
  • Fri, 1/5, 345 or 4p (30 or 45 min only)
  • Wed, 1/17, 1-3p
  • Fri, 1/19, 230-415p

Happy Holidays to all!

Thank you for being a part of Amber Moon Studio! I genuinely appreciate each and every one you.
May your holiday season be merry & bright, how ever you choose to celebrate.

Night & day, slowly returning to me…

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 11/26/23

It’s been 4 weeks since knee #2 got replaced, and I’m so far ahead of the curve on this one. Even my PTs are amazed where I am. My range of motion is from 0* to 120*. At 6 months, the right knee (#1) was still at 110. It really is a night & day difference between the 2. I managed to get out on my road bike briefly this past Saturday. Yes, range of motion is really good, and I’m still reminded I’m only 4 weeks out. I am still healing. My endurance is still low. I still need lots of sleep. And the amazing #cousinAmy is going home on Wednesday. I’ve been gradually taking over home duties, and I know my kitchen counters are not going to stay clear!

So what does this mean for the studio?

  • Classes will still be taught from a chair through end of year. Then I’ll re-evaluate.
  • Massage sessions – I’m starting to stand a little in each, so it depends on how many sessions I’ve got in a day as to how much standing/sitting I’ll be doing. Too much standing at once affects me the next day. No bueno.
  • Everything else is pretty much normal.

2 weeks off, a new knee, & ready to work back into my regular schedule, slowly & mindfully

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 11/12/23

I’m doing remarkably well. This knee is a night & day difference from knee #1. Firstly, I highly recommend nerve ablation. It was done 2 weeks prior to surgery. I’ve not been on opioids for pain, just Tylenol. Secondly, this knee had a completely different reason for being replaced, and wasn’t as severely out of alignment like the other one. Thirdly, the rest of me was in much better shape going IN to surgery. I hadn’t compensated my walk, which messed with my low back, SI joint & hips on the first knee.

So, 2 weeks off was good. I’ve worn myself out this weekend (in the best possible way), and taken naps (oh blessed naps!). I wasn’t ready to come back until now.

With that said, things will still be modified:

  • Classes & Personal Pilates sessions will be taught from the chair. Not been to a class? It’s a great time to get that attention on form & technique you need, since I can really que what you need.
  • Massages will be done in the medical or CST format for a bit. In English, you’ll be clothed and on top of the sheets. My ability to stand and apply pressure into massage strokes is not there yet. I will need to be seated for the majority of the session, at least thru Thanksgiving.
  • Cousin Amy will be in charge. If she says I need to cancel, I cancel. I can’t always see that I need to. She will. I have been needing a nap a day (lunch-ish), so a reschedule might be in order.

The good news – I’m so far ahead of where I was with my other knee, that I’m hoping I’m back to “normal services” before long. Classes will likely be the thing that takes me the longest time to get back to doing normally.

Thank you

Wanted to say a huge thank you to the favor I put out – I had numerous offers to prepay, I accepted some, and am holding the others in mind in case I need. A few extra expenses popped up that first week off, but it’s all covered now.

Class schedule update

It’s all back. Just me teaching from the chair.

Tomorrow is the day! Knee #2 gets installed!

Yeah, I’m so ready.

Cousin Amy & I have gotten a lot done around the house in prep for this. Ready to go to bed, get a good night’s sleep, and then get a new knee (5a arrival, home that afternoon).

So I’m out for the next 2 weeks. Last knee, the 1.5 weeks I took off just wasn’t enough. Let’s keep fingers crossed that this one has me twiddling my thumbs.

Amy will be posting updates on my personal Facebook page, and I’ll post something quick here by mid-/end of week, let you know how I’m doing.

Until then… happy positive healing thoughts welcome!

2 weeks, small shifts & getting ready!

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, for the 2 weeks starting 10/15/23

Somewhere in Montana & Yellowstone National Park

Yes, Knee #2 installation draws nigh… I’m ready! This knee is on decline, and seems to be declining at just the right time. It’s like I talked to the Universe and asked it to hold on until after cross country was over.

And cross country IS over. Happy/ sad. Our last meet – our division finals – was inspiring. To have seen all these little people training since early August, and finally showing their best. I was just proud. I admit, I hugged a few. They’ve come so far. My 5/6 girls WON their division. By seconds. The other groups (7/8, boys & girls in all the various combos) all placed top 3 in teams, we took 1st individual honors in both boys races, and our top girl was 2nd. Lots of top 15 medals all around.

It was nice to be seen as part of a team. We had other coaches coming up to congratulate us, comment on how BIG our team was (50ish kids over 4 divisions – probably 40 race each weekend). Our team has depth. Something a lot of teams don’t have.

I’m excited to see what they’re gonna do in Track this Spring. Shouldn’t affect my Studio schedule too much… I just need to remember to not do anything else while it’s going on!

The same day, my assistant coach Stephanie out here in Taylor was leading the Taylor Track Time athletes at the Good Life 5k. From this group we had 2 age group winners!

I know she’s excited to be embarking on this journey as coach, and having FUN while doing it. We’ve got 2 more events coming up – Veterans Beer Run 5k and Run for the Roses 5k/10k.

October, finally! Gut check, last event, & a possibility while I’m out

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, 10/2/23

Mammoth Hot Springs, aka "White cliffs of Dover" as called by me during trip.
Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone NP 2023

So here it is. Monday. October. Lots of info right there!

Monday – means I’ve been busy if I’m just getting around to writing this. Between clients & XC coaching, I’m running a little full. There are 2 weeks left in the season, then a break. A little normality. A few more Taylor openings, too! I ready to have a little more free time. Until I see the youngsters again!

October – means Knee #2 is 4 weeks away! I had my CT scan & pre-op appointments this morning. It’s getting real. Which is good cuz knee #2 is getting unhappier, quickly. I think I scheduled it at just the right time. So if you see me starting to sit more during sessions (regardless of format), there is a reason.

Check your gut

I mentioned in a FB/IG post recently that I had a “gut health check” done – and found out more about my food issues. I’m not making digestive enzymes. Nor do I have much gut microbiome – of the 6 types of gut bacteria, I have 1 present.

So I’ve started working with my rockstar registered dietician again. I’m using food and supplements to build the microbiome, and digestive enzymes to help with the breaking down of food. I’m already noticing a big difference in my energy. This is gonna be a long term project, and I’ve looped my PCP into this as well. I’ve worked with Amanda since I moved to Austin, so we always have a good time, and she’s familiar with all my issues.

If you’re interested in seeing what your gut health is like, my link gets you 10% off. For me, the food stuff wasn’t new, but the enzymes & microbiome were definitely a shock. If you feel you’ve got gut issues, give it a go. You’ll get good somethings out of the 66 page report. All you have to do is send in a snip of your hair! It’s normally $95, but you get 10% off the current $38 price.

Final athletic event of 2023 – done!

My last athletic event of the year – Kerrville Sprint Aquabike – went really well. Swim was strong, and I felt better on the bike than I had at TriWaco & Mamma Jamma. Coulda been cuz I backed down on biking the week before (“taper”)?

I’m thinking next year will be a few Aquabike events again, and then… who knows.

Deeply Therapeutic

Please keep in mind I’m out Oct 30 – Nov 10, 2 full weeks. If you need bodywork in that time, please check out Greg – you already know the location (Austin studio!).

I got to test out his BEMER device on Knee #2 after Texas Mamma Jamma. It works on opening up the deep circulation of the area of focus, which brings more blood flow & more healing. I could definitely feel a difference for the next 24 hours, and recovery from that event was pretty quick!

You’re allowed to have a back up massage therapist in cases where your regular (me!) is out. Don’t have one? Give Greg a try, AND ask for $15 off your first session – let him know you’re one of my peeps. He’s in the office Mondays & Tuesdays, so please plan ahead.

Please Fall, come soon (and Hello, Sunshine!)

your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, 9/11/23

Fall has a whole new meaning when you coach cross country! It means big meets until about 12n on Saturdays, way different than what we did up in Indiana. Yeah, we had big meets, but we also has small 2-3 school meets on weekdays. We practiced 5 days per week. These little athletes only get us 2 days a week, with a meet on Saturday. Of course, the majority are in more than 1 sport, so they’re still active, not just specifically running.

Oh the memories.

My little athletes asked me to run with them the other day. I had to explain why I couldn’t, showed them the right knee scar, how the left kneecap was off to the side. I’m sure they were just trying to get a longer break, but I had them run in between my answers. And the best Q: since your knee is metal, if you hit it does it go boinggggggg? That same practice, I also ended up coercing the other 2 coaches to run, as we were short on relay pairs.

One day, I’ll be running with them. Until then, I’m swimming & biking, and event #1 – Texas Mamma Jamma, is this weekend. And right here in Taylor! 15 miles on the bike. The left knee is starting to protest, so I’ll be backing my regular biking down to 45 min after this.

So what fun are YOU planning for this Fall (and by Fall, I mean under 100 degrees)? I’d love to hear.

Studio scheduling stuff

I’m starting to work on Nov & Dec schedules – I’ve reached out to some of you that are on my schedule, but not at a set time. I’ll be trying to settle this section of the schedule soon.

That’s me! Biking thru the ages, with 2 good knees. Notice one thing? That smile of my face! Yeah, here I go again!

Whew. I think that’s it. Thanks for coming all the way down here!

Yellowstone, updates while on post-vacation brain…

Your guide to everything under the moon, the Amber Moon, as of 8/28/23.

The mountains were calling.

I had to go.

And it was oh so good.

Four days in Montana/Wyoming, visiting Yellowstone & the surrounding area. You’ll be seeing the pics as covers for these updates for a good while. Yeah, it was fabulous.

My right knee has come a long way, and I can tell I’ve not been walking for exercise. That leg was protesting a little just cuz it’s not a movement it’s used to. I’ve not been walking because of the LEFT knee. I kinesiotaped it the first day. That didn’t work. Used a knee strap below AND above the knee cap on day 2, and that was better. Still had to mind how much I did.

But being outdoors… that filled my tank up. Being outdoors in the mountains, that filled my soul. I’m looking forward to our cooler temps here in TX so I can be out more. And now I get to re-adapt to the heat. Doh.

Texas Mamma Jamma update

We did it! YOU did it! I’m officially over the $350 in donations mark.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Now to get back to riding after a week in the cool temps… I’m up for the challenge! And my knee is greatly appreciating not walking/hiking. I missed my bikes.

You can still donate to my Texas Mamma Jamma ride, either by my fundraiser linked on facebook or the Texas Mamma Jamma page.

Hello Sunshine… whew… made it…

It’s been a week. Last week, I mean. Universe just kept throwing stuff at me. I had to take more downtime than usual, and focus on what I am learning in The Mind. Good practical application.

Breathe in…. Breathe out…

And with last week, my left knee started talking a little. Maybe it was the increased movement in the pool. Or having fun on the bike when I had tailwind. Or cutting down on the Aleve. Whatever it was, it was talking, so I’m taking it easy & being more mindful. Keep the right knee moving (#1), allow the left (#2) to just relax, do some of the movements.

And swim. Just keep swimming. Already starting to ponder where I’ll swim after my local pool closes, a friend’s neighborhood pool closes, and how knee #2’s bionic date plays in. Now that my right knee no longer hurts from driving, I’m not minding the occasion trip in to Austin for a pool. Taylor’s isn’t open on Mondays, so if that’s a swim day for me, I travel. I really do love swimming. Hoping I can get back to it more quickly than I was able with knee #1.

Guinea Pig opportunity

I’ve opened up CST: Enteric Brain (The Gut) guinea pig sessions. Since Austin is running full, they’ll only be available in Taylor. These sessions will focus on going thru the new techniques/information I’ve been learning. These are discounted off the regular CST price, and available in 30 & 60 min sessions. Packages of 3 are also available if you want to experience & explore the depth of the work. Book all 3 when you get the package to make sure you get in, please. Must be used by Oct 27, 2023.

If you’ve got a CST session already scheduled, I’ll probably start adding bits in (vs the whole of new techniques).

Support Sharon’s Ride: Texas Mamma Jamma training update

With the knee starting to protest, I’m focusing more on enjoying my rides. Goal is to move, not move & irritate the knee. This said, I’m still quite comfortable where I am, on my ability to get my 15 miles in and then go massage the Big Wigs after (those that raise over $1500).

I’ve raised $87 so far. Be on the look out on social media of $5 Friday and days I’ll match what you donate.

If you’re ready to support my Texas Mamma Jamma ride, you can go to my fundraiser linked to facebook or the Texas Mamma Jamma page. I great appreciate your support!

Hello Sunshine: CST, guinea pig, biking & so forth

I recently had a client ask what you’re supposed to feel/get/receive out of craniosacral session (CST). Everyone is different, so it’s hard to be precise. You might feel like you’ve been taken out of the fight or flight response: you might feel more together, more in sync. One client felt elongated & like she was floating afterward. You might feel like things shift without putting your finger on what. There can be emotional release, there can be trauma integrations, the relationships around you may change. Sometimes shifts are subtle, other times, obvious. What I feel when I work on you may translate to something entirely different in your world of awareness. And it has a cumulative effect when continued over time. How body & other systems aware are you? That will also make a difference.

And with all of this said, I just started another CST course on The Mind, and at the end of the month, I’ll have another CST class on the “enteric brain”, i.e. your gut. I’ll have discounted guinea pig opportunities available for these (you’ll likely have to pick one) in the next Hello Sunshine. Currently too early to say when I’ll be ready for them. If you’re called to be a guinea pig (squeak!), you’ll be able to schedule up to 3 sessions at the discounted price between when I open them up, and Oct 27 (last work day before knee #2 gets done). First come, first CST’d.

Support Sharon’s Ride: Texas Mamma Jamma training update

I’m just biking along, appreciating, truly, that I don’t have to worry about running or walking in this heat. With biking at least you create your own headwind!

I was recently talking to an athlete, and was recalling my first step into triathlon was doing the bike leg on a relay team at Memphis in May (Olympic Triathlon), probably in 2004, before I ever moved to Austin. I completed the 25 mile bike on my mountain bike in just over 90 min. I’ve still got that mountain bike. It’s been a huge help in my knee rehab – it’s got long pedal crank arms, so I get challenge to my range of motion. My road bike used to have the same long crank arms, but I was having a harder time riding it due to body position. We changed out the pedal crank and it’s now much better. Having the right equipment is huge in getting things moving correctly. I’m grateful to have 2 bikes that improve the knee differently.

As I posted on social media yesterday, I’m almost at 82 miles for the month, and only half way thru. It’s surprising how quickly the miles add up! I guess when I’m riding mostly 4 days per week, it’s gonna quickly. I’m quite happy with my long ride being “just” an hour. I also do 30 & 45 min rides to get it all to fit into my week. One of the big keys to getting exercise in – make it fit your life. I don’t have need, or even desire at this point really, to do more than I’m currently doing.

Next year, hopefully, will be a different story!

If you’re ready to support my ride for the Big Pink Bus, you can go to my fundraiser linked to facebook or the Texas Mamma Jamma page. Your support is greatly appreciated!
